Duties

Under the direction of the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations, the Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor is a licensed pharmacist who assists the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations in the performance of all operations duties and responsibilities for primarily inpatient pharmacy services. The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor assists the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations in planning, directing, and coordinating the inpatient operations section of the pharmacy to provide comprehensive, high quality pharmaceutical care services to all patients served by the Wichita VA Medical Center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics.

This incumbent assists the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations in managing inpatient pharmacy operations, supervising all assigned pharmacy staff members, students, and trainees, and ensuring the effective utilization of all resources. The Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations may delegate responsibility for managing the overall pharmacy services or the direct supervision of any specific pharmacy section, program, or activity to the Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor. The incumbent will be familiar with outpatient pharmacy functions to serve as back-up supervisor for outpatient operations in the absence of or at the direction of the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations.

Duties include but are not limited to the following;

  • The incumbent will coordinate, monitor, develop, and evaluate the activities of the Clinical Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians working in the inpatient pharmacy section. This includes establishing programmatic goals of the inpatient pharmacy section and assigning responsibility to the staff for achievement of those goals. This is accomplished with regular meetings with pharmacy staff to outline these goals and activities. The progress of programs initiated and performed by the pharmacy staff will be reported to the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations. Personnel evaluation functions include interviewing prospective employee candidates and recommending appointments, advancements, promotions, or disciplinary actions as warranted.
  • The incumbent works with local and VISN clinical pharmacists and students to monitor drug use for compliance with formulary, drug use guidelines and dispensing guidelines with respect to cost-effective use of available agents, and recommends local and system-wide interventions as necessary to assure efficient usage of resources.
  • The incumbent is responsible for the planning and development of pharmacy operations consistent with the goals of Pharmacy Service. This is accomplished with regular meetings with the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations and the other Pharmacy Service administrators to inform and outline these programs and activities.
  • The incumbent is responsible for ensuring ongoing compliance with medication management standards set forth by the Joint Commission and OIG. He or she will assist in continuous reporting and improvement of medication errors and adverse drug reactions.
  • The incumbent oversees development, implementation, and maintenance of high quality and highly ethical, age-specific pharmaceutical care programs which are designed to improve patient outcomes in a cost-effective manner. These programs will be managed by the Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor working in collaboration with the other pharmacy staff.
  • Incumbent is involved in operational, technical, consultative, educational, and administrative functions of the inpatient pharmacy services and supports the mission to provide accurate, timely and progressive pharmaceutical service.
  • The incumbent promotes the adherence to practice guidelines regarding IV admixtures (USP <797> & <800>), medication dispensing, proper storage and monitoring safe drug use by providing unbiased drug information, research on regulations, directives, and general pharmacy practice requirements.
  • The incumbent utilizes continuous quality improvement methods to detect and define problems and implements corrective actions to improve patient care and efficient use of resources.
  • The incumbent develops pertinent service and medical center policies, procedures, and guidelines for effective, safe, and cost-efficient pharmacy practice.
  • The incumbent serves as advisor to the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations on matters related to pharmacy practice, personnel management, drug therapy and drug selection.


Work Schedule: M-F 8am-4:30pm with occasional rotating weekends.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
  • Licensure. Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency. Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

GS-13: In addition to the basic requirements, to be qualified for this position at the GS 13 level, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Experience: In addition to the GS-12 requirements, must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

AND

You must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions.
  • Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy.
  • Skill in managing people or programs.

Physical Requirements: Physical movements involve completion of routine pharmacy functions which include but are not limited to significant computer work/typing, prescription order entry and processing, contact of patients (both face to face and via phone). Certain tasks are repetitive in nature and require multiple steps performed in succession for success. The incumbent should be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without significant difficulty. Incumbent must be able to stand or sit in one place for considerable time during completion of complex tasks. Complexity of mental processes involved is extensive, demanding, and challenging.
