Duties
The position will involve periods of pertinent formal education and periods of employment within the organization. The goal is for the student trainee to become familiar with work in support of Physical Sciences occupations, programs, projects and functions of the assigned organization in the Physical Sciences Group (1300).
The Physical Science Student Trainee is responsible for assisting in Physical Science occupations and providing support work as it relates to management, program and administrative analysis, and process evaluation.
Assists and supports the day-to-day tasks associated with a variety of the Physical Science Group of positions and will include work assignments that concentrate in one or more of the following areas: General Physical Science, Health Physics, Physics, Chemistry, Meteorology, Meteorology Technician, Navigational Information, Cartography and/or Cartographic Technician.
The student trainee performs a mixture of routine and somewhat complex tasks under the general direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or other more experienced employee. The work activities typically support the work of other employees and contribute to the activities of the organizational unit.
The student works with teams working on mission-related projects. Engages in meaningful learning and development activities while applying basic knowledge and limited experience in performing tasks. Assists manager and other employees in day-to-day operations.
Works with more experienced team members in compiling and consolidating data and/or computing or verifying the accuracy of data. Works with and supports more experienced team members, team leads, project/program managers and/or managers.
Receives detailed instructions from a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee as to performing specific tasks. Regularly refers problems and work issues to a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee for guidance.
Assignments and tasks will serve to provide support to mission-related work goals and objectives.
Contacts are primarily internal to one organizational unit to share basic information and to receive guidance. May have limited contacts with external customers. Work is reviewed regularly during assignments and at completion to ensure timeliness and all aspects of quality.

APPOINTMENT - If selected, your appointment may not exceed a total of 120 days after completing educational requirementsParticipation in this program may be terminated at any time.
AGREEMENT - All participants must sign a written Gateways Internship Agreement with their manager that clearly identifies expectations of the appointment such as duties, length of appointment, work schedule, training, mentorship etc.
CONVERSION - Although not guaranteed, an intern may be converted from the Internship Program to a permanent appointment without further competition in accordance with established policy. Conversion must occur within 120 days after successful completion of the educational program (awarding of diploma, certificate, or degree), completion of a minimum of 640 hours of career-related work experience, required training, mentorship, and other requirements in accordance with the intern’s participant agreement. Additionally, the intern must meet qualification requirements and any other position requirements associated with the position to which converted. The intern must be converted to an occupation related to his/her academic training and career-related work experience as outlined in their participant agreement.

This position has a positive education requirement; college transcripts are required for ALL candidates newly appointed to the FAA in the 1399 series.
College transcripts must be submitted from current FAA employees applying for internal vacancies if they have never held a position in the 1399 series with the FAA.
College transcripts are not required from current FAA employees who are currently occupying a 1399 series.
If selected, official transcripts are required prior to employment.

If you fail to submit documentation, you will be assessed as a non-veteran.
Veterans currently on active duty claiming veterans' preference: You will be granted tentative preference if you submit a document from the armed forces certifying that within 120 days you are expected to be discharged or released from active duty service under honorable conditions and your application shows that you have the required service. Prior to being appointed, you must provide to the Servicing Human Resource Management Office a DD Form 214 documenting discharge/release and showing that the service was honorable or general. If you are on terminal leave, you must provide documentation certifying authorized terminal leave.
