Duties

SUMMARY CONTINUED:

For Anchorage, AK:
The selectee will be entitled to a cost-of-living allowance of 1.69% in addition to the basic salary.
For Hilo, HI: The selectee will be entitled to a cost-of-living allowance of 3.15% in addition to the basic salary.

There are two vacancies; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

As a Physical Science Technician within the VOLCANO SCIENCE CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Maintain existing volcano monitoring networks of analog/digital equipment and relay stations at USGS Volcano Science Center volcano observatories.
  • Keeps proper records, including, but not limited to, station maintenance histories, field files, landowner information, and equipment/station databases.
  • Installs, configures, diagnoses, and performs basic repairs of electronic geophysical station components including seismometers, infrasound, meteorological, and GNSS sensors, analog and digital dataloggers, complex power systems, satellite equipment, cellular modems, grounding, GPS systems, IP links, and computer networking equipment.
  • Proper continuous operation 24/7 is monitored, and defects are addressed quickly to minimize impacts on the whole system.
  • Installation requires configuration of computer-based dataloggers and radio/telemetry/networking equipment, integration with existing systems, and validation of the acquired data.
  • Work with scientists/engineers and other technicians from USGS and other institutions on special studies and field response to volcanic unrest and eruptions.
  • Assists in the planning, design, and fabrication of electronic and mechanical systems as part of the installation of new monitoring stations, relay stations, and the relocation or upgrade of existing stations.
  • Contacts Federal, State, local and private agencies or property owners to obtain access for installing monitoring stations.
Physical Demand:
Laboratory work requires prolonged periods of standing and manual dexterity to operate equipment. Field work requires moderate to strenuous activities such as walking, bending and standing for long periods of time in uncomfortable weather, and driving a vehicle.

Work Environment:
Field work involves moderate risks and discomforts, exposure to other conditions such as rain, cold/hot weather, and rapidly running or icy streams and rivers. Work in environments where a scarce resource (such as a helicopter) must be shared by several groups. Laboratory work involves exposure to moderate risks or discomforts such as high levels of noise and vibration, dust, grease, exposed moving parts of machinery, or irritant fumes and chemicals. Work requires protective clothing, gear, and observance of safety precautions.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • This position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

Qualifications

For GS-10: Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-10 level.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of this position. Specialized experience may include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.

Examples of GS-09 level assignments may include:
  • Compiling and evaluating seismic data collected and transmitted from Lahar field stations in order to resolve seismic equipment performance issues.
  • Testing, calibrating, and maintaining a variety of electronic equipment, including but not limited to digital radios, broadband, seismometers, seismic digitizers, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receivers, and digital electronics, to support and maintain lahar detection stations.
  • Assessing suitability of a variety of sites for new lahar detection stations.
  • Testing hardware and digital radio telemetry.
  • Installing, repairing, maintaining, or replacing instrumentation, enclosures, station DC power systems, and digital radio telemetry components.
  • Assembling and installing geophysical electronic equipment.
  • Maintaining volcano monitoring networks of analog/digital equipment and relay stations by either AVO, HVO, CVO, CalVO, YVO, or VDAP.
**OR applicants may substitute successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in the physical sciences or other field of study directly related to the work of this position for the required 1 year of specialized experience if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of this position.

**OR applicants may substitute a combination of appropriate specialized experience (as described above) and appropriate graduate level education (as described above) that is beyond the first 2 years of progressive graduate study to meet the qualification requirements.
