Summary

Welcome to the Sensor Science Division (SSD) in NIST's Physical Measurement Laboratory! Our Mission is to foster the next generation of SI-traceable dimensional, thermodynamic, and optical radiation measurements and their application by providing calibrations, standards, and innovations that improve U.S. industrial competitiveness and quality-of-life.

This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.

Duties

Our Mission is to foster the next generation of SI-traceable dimensional, thermodynamic, and optical radiation measurements and their application by providing calibrations, standards, and innovations that improve U.S. industrial competitiveness and quality of life.

As the new Physical Scientist on our team, you will:

  • Assist with the experimental design, development, and validation of radiometry and scintillator experiments for the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) synchrotron beamlines.
  • Construct and calibrate experimental setups for the testing of EUV scintillator materials that will provide a positive impact to the EUV community.
  • Research and develop mechanical and optical design of components for ultra-high vacuum synchrotron end-stations.
  • Plan and carry out tasks with limited supervision.
  • Present and publish results as appropriate

Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirements

Basic Requirements:

1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

OR

2. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience in mechanical and optical design AND data acquisition hardware and software for the designing and constructing of radiometric and scintillator-based experiments for the extreme ultraviolet (EUV).

OR

Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements.

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
