Summary

The Kansas City VA Medical Center is currently hiring for a physician assistant in the Emergency Medicine Service. The position will be full time and is located at the main hospital in Kansas City, MO.

Duties

The incumbent duties are as follows:
  • Provides quality patient-centered patient care to both inpatients and outpatients for adults age 18-65 and older adults age 65+ as assigned by Service Chief, Emergency Medicine Service.
  • Has approved clinical privileges in the areas of his/her expertise as related to the Emergency Department and in all areas required to carry out the duties of his/her assignments and/or responsibilities within the Emergency Medicine Service.
  • Demonstrate sound decision making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physicians.
  • Facilitate the delivery of appropriate patient care in collaboration with other health professionals, medical center staff, and management.
  • Participates in the peer review process when requested.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary activities involving the treatment plan and discharge plans of patients in the Emergency Department.
  • Systematically evaluates patient care programs in the Emergency Department.
  • Exhibits leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and finding from research and studies.
  • Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal.
  • Successfully integrates patient care activities on Medical Services and other patient care programs at the medical center and in the community such as Social Work, Prosthetics, Home Based Health Care (HBHC), and private nursing homes.
  • Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients when clinical assignments so dictate.
  • Completes all medical record documentation in CPRS within prescribed timeframes.
  • Includes patient/family/significant other/health care provider in establishing realistic, measurable goals related to health education and treatment plan and in planning care on a continuum; assists staff in the process of mutual goal setting
  • Demonstrates skill in implementation of clinical practice guidelines and protocols for patients with complex medical care needs.
  • Documents and rates administrative and clinical information in a thorough and accurate manner
  • Utilizes problem solving methodologies to resolve problems that impact on patient care or staff performance.
  • Plans implements, and evaluates care based on age specific requirements of the patient.
  • Serves as a role model in assessing and evaluating patient status and identifying priority needs for care.
  • Develops the initial plan of care and updates the plan, serving as a resource person to less experienced staff, and acts as a leader in developing standards of care.
  • Makes decisions based on current professional standards and evidence based practice guidelines
  • Assesses veterans by utilizing advanced clinical judgement and physical assessment skills.
  • Identifies acute/non-acute/chronic health problems.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Preferred Experience and Certifications -- Basic Life Support (BLS) - Talent Management System (TMS)The incumbent will be responsible for promoting a culture of safety and will fully cooperate in efforts to improve patient safety and eradicate potential events including the reporting of events resulting in actual or potential injury to a patient. The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of the reporting procedures involving safety issues relating to patients.

The candidate must meet the following:
1. Education: a. Graduate of a PA training program or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC_PA) or one of its predecessor organizations
b. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

2. Certification. Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VHA Directive 1063(1), amended May 17, 2022. If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked, or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.
b. Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Staffing, Part II, Appendix II-G38, dated September 27, 2020.

3. Physician Assistant appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S>C. 4102(d).

(3) Ethics. Safeguards patient privacy and confidentiality. Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner respecting the patient's values and beliefs.

(4) Interpersonal Skills. Works effectively with patients, families, caregivers, and other professional and support personnel.

(5) Research
(a) Demonstrates awareness of research application to practice.(b) Research medical literature and applies evidenced-based medicine to improve clinical practice.
