The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a Physician (Cardiothoracic Surgeon). The Physician (Cardiothoracic Surgeon) will function in Surgical Service.
Major Duties include but are not limited to:
Evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, admission, history and physical examination and related procedures, consultation, preoperative, postoperative, operative, and nonoperative care to patients presenting with illnesses, injuries, diseases, deformities and disorders of the heart, chest wall, lungs, aorta, and major aortic branches. These diagnostic approaches include but are not limited to coronary angiography and CT angiography. echocardiography; CT scan and MRI; PET/scans etc. Privileges also include supervision, teaching, and involvement of medical students, trainees, residents, and fellows in the same setting. Treatment modalities which will be available and used by attending CT surgeons will include but limited to:
- Coronary revascularization
- Congenital conditions in adult patients
- Valve procedures including open and minimally invasive repair and replacement as well as Trans catheter approaches (TAVRs; transapical mitral valve procedures; mitral clip etc.)
- Aortic root, ascending aortic, aortic arch, descending thoracic aortic procedures; exploration of major branches (i.e. axillary, femoral)
- Cardiac arrhythmia treatment
- Management of pericardial disease
- Emergent operations on heart, mediastinum
- Heart Failure management both acute and chronic with temporary and durable mechanical circulatory support devices (IABP, LVAD, RVAD, Impella, ECMO etc.)
- Respiratory failure (ECMO)
- Acute Pulmonary Embolism (embolectomy, ECMO etc.)
- Lung resection and pneumonectomy, both open and VATS, and Robotic (with training)
- Procedures on chest wall and mediastinum
- Procedures on esophagus and foregut
- Management of critically ill patients in intensive care units with invasive monitoring such PA catheters using vasoactive medications; thoracic drains and explorations; ventilator support, and assist devices as listed above.

Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): This position is eligible for
the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply. Learn more.

Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): A Relocation incentive may be available for highly qualified applicants.
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm
