Responsible for the practice of medicine or direct service to patients involving the performance of diagnostic, preventative or therapeutic services to patients in hospitals or clinics. Prescribe or administer treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination and other specialized medical care to treat, prevent illness, disease or injury. Order, perform and interpret tests and analyze records, reports and examination information to diagnose patients condition. Collect, record and maintain patient information such as medical history, reports and examination results. Experience with electronic health records is preferred. Monitor patient's conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary. Explain procedures and discuss tests results or prescribed treatments as necessary. Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients. Refer patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary. Coordinate work with nurses, pharmacists, social workers and other allied health professionals in the provision of a variety of health services.
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position. Must have a valid driver's license.

Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.
Internship Program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link)
Residency Program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (external link)

Fellowship Programinvolves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.
GS-13: Three (3) years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training.
GS-14: Four(4) years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training.
GS-15: Five (5) years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training.
Final Year Residents:
Applications will be accepted from applicants who are in their final year of residency and expected to complete their residency training within the next 12 months. Such applicants are required to provide evidence of meeting all position requirements before they can enter on duty.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR:
Applicant must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Family Medicine. The Board Certification in Family Practice is determined to be essential to perform the duties and responsibility of this particular position. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
