Summary

This position is assigned to the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Community Programs (N922) Branch; Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Recreational Fleet and Family Readiness Support Services (N94); Commander, Navy Region Hawaii, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam (JBPHH), Honolulu, HI. The purpose of this position is to provide customer service to patrons as well as to perform a variety of duties in support of the MWR community recreation program at Hickam Arts & Crafts Center.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • 1. Assist in completing picture frame orders. Under the guidance of experienced picture framers, select materials, cuts stock and assembles frames, cuts glass, mat boards and completes the frame package.

    2. Answers routine questions from customers and may make suggestions. Takes customer frame order, performs cash handling duties, completes opening and close out procedures and necessary housekeeping duties in the facility.

    3. Assists customers in techniques including the use and safe practice of shop equipment. Issues tools used by self-help customers.

    4. Performs other duties as assigned.

    CONTROLS OVER WORK:
    Receives guidance and technical instructions from experienced picture framers in the form of equipment training, work orders, and oral instructions. Routine work assignments may be performed independently. Incumbent follows established safety procedures and practices when using hand and power equipment. Work is spot checked in progress and upon completion for compliance with instructions.

    Employee is expected to use initiative to plan ahead and determine what needs to be done; take ownership and responsibility for assigned tasks, the work area and facilities; put forth extra effort during busy periods or if special projects need to be completed. Employee is responsible for ensuring he/she understands their duties and responsibilities and to ask questions if clarification is needed and to keep the supervisor informed of any problems or difficulties encountered. Employee is expected to strive for the continued improvement of the program and live up to the Services Promise.

Must request supervisor's approval for leave and complete leave slips as required. Must sign in and out or clock in and out as directed. Must be neatly groomed and comply with dress standards when reporting for work. Must comply with safety requirements maintain housekeeping and sanitation standards, comply with security procedures and report job injuries and hazards to supervisor immediately. Must operate vehicles in a safe manner. Must comply with mandatory training requirements.

    SKILL IN WORK: Performs tasks well whether they require physical, technical, supervisory or managerial skills.
    Employee is expected to be proficient in assembling framed products for customers. Finished products must meet standards of quality and consistency acceptable to management. Projects must be completed within time and cost constraints, following appropriate and prescribed methods with waste kept to a minimum. All transactions (e.g., work orders, payments, etc.) must be completed according to established procedures. Employee is expected to provide complete and accurate information to customers and demonstrate proper methods of using tools and equipment. Employee is expected to keep the work area neat, clean, and organized and follow all safety precautions.

    OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:

    Skill and knowledge:
    Skill in the use of basic hand and power woodworking tools. Mathematical aptitude to be able to measure and calculate materials needed for framing. Some artistic and creative aptitude to design frame layouts and attention to details to produce quality products. Ability to clearly communicate with customers.

    Work involves physical effort and extended periods of standing, bending, and stooping while working on projects or assisting customers. Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 20 lbs. unassisted and frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers.

    Working conditions:
    Work is performed indoors and subject to noise and dust from power equipment. Workers are exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises and scrapes, splinters, muscle strains and other injuries from using hand and power tools. Safety equipment and protective devices including safety glasses are used to minimize hazards.
