Podiatry is the healthcare profession that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of foot, ankle, and lower extremity conditions through medical and surgical means. Podiatric surgery requires training and experience in complex foot and ankle procedures. This experience in providing care tailored to the unique needs of the Veteran population, including sensitivity to the physical and psychological challenges such as service related injuries, comorbid conditions, and mental health issues as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Major Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Providing history and physical examinations with an emphasis on diagnoses of foot/ankle pathology and identification of related systemic conditions
- Completing medical and minor surgical management of podiatric pathology
- Prescribing of pharmaceutical and therapeutical devices (orthotics, prosthetic devices, plaster or fiberglass casts, immobilization devices, etc.)
- Consultation, referrals, and co-management of patients with complicated systemic conditions
- Maintenance and upkeep of patients' medical charts and other documents necessary in the operation of a Community Living Center (CLC) and outpatient treatment clinic
Core Clinical Privileges:
- Clinical providers evaluate, diagnose, treat, and provide consultation to adult patients with acute, chronic, and complex pedal problems
- Perform clinical functions appropriate to credentials, training, and experience
- Perform outpatient clinic patient care but may also need to provide care in the CLC
- Order and provide preliminary interpretation of appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic modalities
- Complete all electronic, clinical, daily charting and documentation required by the Medical Center in a timely manner, including outcomes reporting as appropriate
- Conduct peer reviews when requested
- Maintain compliance with the VA policy
- May supervise educational trainees in accordance with Medical Center policy
- Assess Veteran's risks and benefits before obtaining appropriate informed consent and performing outpatient clinical procedures including:
- Toenail procedures
- Soft tissue procedures (including incision/biopsy soft tissue lesions, repair of simple lacerations, incision and drainage of localized abscess, ulcer debridement
- Foreign body removal (superficial/subcutaneous)
- Flexor tenotomies
- Foot and ankle fractures when surgery is not an option, needed, or elected.
Work Schedule: The scheduled tour of duty is determined by the supervisor.

Podiatrist Basic Requirements
- Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~
- Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~
- Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
Preferences:
- Training and experience in podiatric surgery, including complex foot and ankle procedure.
- Board certification in podiatric surgery and a robust history of performing a wide range of surgical interventions
- Experience providing care tailored to the unique needs of the Veteran population; includes sensitivity to the physical and psychological challenges that Veterans face, such as service-related injuries, comorbid conditions, and mental health issues like PTSD.
