Summary

About the Position: Power Plant Electrician A has the responsibility of working with a maintenance crew of craftsman and trainees engaged in planning, organizing, directing and participating in the installation, modification, and repair of all electrical equipment at a hydroelectric power project.

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

  • Maintains, adjusts, performs preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and overhauls the electrical features of large hydroelectric generators and appurtenant equipment.
  • Utilizes test instruments such as ammeters, volt meters, meggers, oil testers and analyzers.
  • Performs electrical switching in order to effect or remove a clearance.
  • Inspects and tests electrical equipment to ensure that the equipment is fit for continued service.
  • Adheres to rules and regulations of the District Safety Program covering on-the-job conduct, good housekeeping, care of equipment, fire prevention and various other safety precautions.
  • Installs new equipment and associated wiring and controls for modernization.
  • Operates shop equipment such as presses, bench grinders, hydraulic presses, saws, and air or electrical portable tools such as drills, grinders, impact wrenches, solder guns, and brazing torches to rework or build new parts for equipment.
  • Operates overhead and gantry cranes for heavy equipment handling or dismantling main units.
  • Adheres to rules and regulations of the District Safety Program covering on-the-job conduct, good housekeeping, care of equipment, fire prevention and various other safety precautions.
  • Observes safety requirements associated with moving equipment; compressed air, gas, and liquids; electric shock; flying particles; dust, dirt, and fumes; working in high places, and working in close quarters.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health, ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs and require a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Power Plant Electrician A ~ without more than normal supervision. Have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex to work as a Power Plant A Electrician without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Power Plant A Electrician task/activities. I can organize and participate in the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of electrical power control equipment, distribution lines, or electric-generating equipment at hydroelectric powerplant, steam generating plant, nuclear plant, or commercial heavy industrial plant. In addition, I have the ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain power distribution circuits, control systems, communication systems, and high voltage heavy duty generating and distribution systems. - - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
  • PHYSICAL EFFORTS- Physical effort includes climbing stairs and ladders; bending, stooping, and standing for long period; working in cramped quarters and/or in tiring positions; and lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and twisting objects frequently weighing up to, and occasionally over, 45 pounds.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS- Work is performed in the project powerhouse, other structures, and outdoors. The incumbent is exposed to noise, extremes of heat or cold, dirt, oils, greases, dust, energized equipment, moving machinery, odors, and fumes. Works around and over water, in damp drafty areas, and at various heights. May work with a variety of toxic or caustic materials. There is a possibility of cuts, burns, falls, and electrical shock. The incumbent must wear all appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing, and successfully complete and maintain all occupational health requirements.
