Summary

About the Position: This is a full-time civilian faculty position at the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) School of Strategic Landpower, Department of Distance Education as provided under Title 10 USC. Initial appointment may be up to three years, the first of which may be a trial period. The appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Academic rank and salary will be based on the selectee's academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments.

Duties

  • Teach and facilitate seminar dialogue for the USAWC core course in Defense Management. The Defense Management course introduces Department of Defense systems and processes required to generate and prepare military force for the nation.
  • Teach and facilitate seminar dialogue for the USAWC core course in Strategic Leadership (SL). The SL course reviews individual and organizational factors that have shown to generate and maintain competitive advantage in large organizations.
  • Participate in and contribute to faculty development programs that prepare all DCLM faculty to facilitate instruction in the Defense Management and Strategic Leadership Defense Management courses.
  • Design and teach elective courses related to the application of Defense Management systems and processes to resource Department of Defense missions.
  • Contribute to specialized instruction in either strategic leadership or defense management concentration programs. These specialized programs provide more tailored educational experiences for USAWC students.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be able to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.

Qualifications

This is a term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 3 years. Appointment may be extended in one- to five-year increments thereafter. In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in behavioral or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

OR

C. Experience: Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following:

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

1. Knowledge of governmental or business systems and processes that conceptually relate to DOD systems, processes, and management.
2. A demonstrated ability of superlative teaching at the graduate, and/or executive or Senior Service College level. This should include the ability to conceptualize, design, and write lesson plans to support instruction, as well as preparedness for developing successful, mature, professional students.
3. Knowledge of scholarly research and publication-or evidence of potential for such research and publication-in areas relevant to the curriculum.
4. Demonstrated ability to prepare, teach, and lecture on subjects related to core and elective offerings.
5. An advanced degree in a relevant field, with a PhD or other terminal degree (DBA) preferred. Related fields typically include artificial intelligence, business administration, data science, decision science, strategy, and STEM fields.
