    The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for a full time, permanent, Psychiatry Medical Director in Mental Health Service line. Incumbent reports administratively to the Chief of Staff at the Sioux Falls VA HCS.

    Responsibilities


    The Mental Health Service (MHS) Medical Director is responsible for the clinical performance of Mental Health (MH) in accordance with the mission of the Medical Center, Network, and VHA.

    • The Mental Health Medical Director provides clinical leadership to the Service.
    • Directs the development and maintenance of innovative cost-effective programs, which meets JCAHO, Network 23, VHA Headquarters, and medical center standards.
    • Develops and maintains continuing programs in the areas of professional peer review, organizational improvement, continuing education, scope of practice, clinical privileging and other quality improvement activities.
    • Assures sound financial, human resource, space and equipment practices, consistent with medical center goals and objectives.
    • Assures a safe work environment.
    • Serves as first line supervisor and has supervisory authority over the medical staff.
    Clinical Administrative/Supervisory Authority/Program Management: (40%)
    • Responsible for providing input for staffing levels, hiring, training, assuring competency and nurturing an appropriate mix of staff necessary to provide the range of product line services.
    • Responsible for the development and implementation of policy and procedures, which guide professional and support staff in the entire range of functional activities.
    • Assures that rules, regulations, laws, standards of practice, benchmarks for productivity, quality, and customer service expectations are met or exceeded.
    • Assures there are efforts in place to continually improve performance.
    Clinical Responsibilities: (40%)
    • Examine, diagnose, and treat Veterans and their families, and maintain medical records.
    • Provide consultation within their discipline.
    • Provide clinical leadership and problem solving for clinical programs of which Mental Health Service has direct responsibility.
    • Spends a majority of his/her clinical time on the following: Treat mentally ill patients in various settings as required; Participate in treatment planning and meetings as required for clinical functioning; Provide quality care based on current standards of practice.
    Other Significant Responsibilities: (10%)
    • Support services are provided in a medical center setting or community based outpatient clinics.
    • Interacts directly with other product line managers as Mental Health's functional subject matter expert and as a member of Mental Health leadership.
    • Directs and evaluates work performed by the distinct disciplines involved in mental health care in order to provide a comprehensive continuum of care.
    Research: (10%)
    • The incumbent is responsible for the quality and integrity of all research conducted by members of the MHS.
    • Be able to identify, execute, participate in research activities, and generate effective reports that are worthy of publication.
    • Will supervise and support staff and student research development.
    • Will communicate and promote and develop the broad use of the results of research.

    Qualifications
    Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

    The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    Preferred Experience: 1- 2 years leadership experience, Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrist

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements: Daily intermittent walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and carrying of lightweight items required. Rigid deadlines and need for high degree of accuracy periodically becomes stressful.
    Education

    Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Authorized
    This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. To participate in the program, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy 1021 and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.
