Duties
This is an excepted service appointment, that confers competitive status after two years and upon meeting all performance and OPM qualification requirements.
This position is located in Denali National Park and Preserve in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Performs dispatch and call-taking services for a wide variety of complex public safety-related incidents and operations. As an advanced senior dispatcher serving in a complex dispatch environment, provides training to lower-graded and/or new dispatchers and informs them on proper procedures as required.
- Operates a multi-frequency radio console for multi-units and areas. Prioritizes radio traffic and related communications. Serves as primary point of contact for Law Enforcement and other public safety responders. Provides training to new employees.
- Accesses, analyzes, and utilizes information from a variety of national, state, or local law enforcement-related computer databases/systems/networks. As an advanced senior dispatcher, works with dispatchers, technicians, and others on troubleshooting computer network outages that do not respond to standard solutions. At the higher grade levels, provides technical guidance, orientation, and training to new employees or lower-level dispatchers.
- Assists law enforcement officers with investigations and court document preparation.
- Performs records management duties including maintenance of incident logs, data-entry, quality control, and preparation of statistical reports.
At the GS-2151-06 level, the duties are designed to prepare the selectee for higher-level assignments, and as such the selectee will receive detailed instructions and specific deadlines, will have examples to follow, and work will be subject to review while in progress.
At the GS-2151-07 level, the duties are designed to prepare the selectee for the highest-level assignments. Selectee will be expected to work more independently while still receiving instructions and specific deadlines. Selectee's work will be subject to review at a decreased interval.
At the GS-2151-08 level, the selectee is expected to work independently with minimal instruction and review. The selectee is expected to train others and take initiative on projects.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor.
Hourly Rate Pay Range by Grade:
GS-06 steps 1 to 10: $24.60 to $31.98 per hour + COLA
GS-07 steps 1 to 10: $27.34 to $35.54 per hour + COLA
GS-08 steps 1 to 10: $30.28 to $39.36 per hour + COLA
Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) for this duty station is 3%

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 2-year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
This trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. SELECTIVE FACTORS:
This position performs as a Dispatcher providing public safety dispatch operation in a complex environment and must be able to obtain and maintain access for both the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) and National Crime Information Computer (NCIC) systems, both of which require that the incumbent cannot have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor.

This position requires a typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute. You must self-certify your ability to type at least 40 words per minute during the application process. Candidates that do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. If after certification of typing skills, it is determined the incumbent does not have or maintains at least a proficiency of 40 words per minute or higher, the incumbent may be removed for a failure to maintain a condition of employment. Additional information
A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the person selected for the position is outside more than 50 miles from the Denali Park, AK duty station and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses under the Federal Travel Regulations.
Physical Demands: Incumbent must function efficiently in a confined space for extended periods with no breaks and no opportunity to leave the confines of the Communications Center. The dispatcher is considered an "essential employee," meaning he/she is required to work most holidays, report for duty during adverse weather conditions, and be expected to work for long hours exceeding normally scheduled shifts in case of emergencies. Position is sedentary with high amounts of stress. Incumbent is subject to shift work, rotating shift work, and uncommon tours of duty. Work requires use of the voice in vocal communications for periods of hours at a time. Voice must be clear, audible, and tone effective with words plainly spoken and understandable. Incumbent must be able to hear clearly and discern a variety of audible communications and signals simultaneously. Incumbent must be able to read critical information from multiple sources, including computer screen, fax, and written log quickly and accurately. The work is of an emergency nature and is emotionally stressful. Incumbent must possess manual dexterity sufficient to operate computer terminals/keyboards and related equipment and to maintain written logs.
Work involves occasional lifting of boxes and supplies up to weights of 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: The work is normally performed in a well-lighted and temperature-controlled room. Noise levels are routinely high due to electronic equipment, telephones, radios, and other discussions ongoing in the performance of duties. The setting is typically confined and secure, and entrance and egress is controlled.
During the training period and/or on other occasions, the incumbent will be assigned to accompany field law enforcement personnel in patrol vehicles to learn or gain a more detailed familiarization with agency field operating procedures and jurisdictional boundaries.
Incumbent may not leave the center unless relieved by another qualified dispatcher.
