About the Position:
The surrounding community is comprised of the towns of Leesville, Deridder, New Llano, and Anacoco. The nearest cities are Alexandria (45 miles northeast) and Lake Charles (55 miles south). https://home.army.mil/polk/index.php

Duties

  • Performs crisis intervention with distraught emergency callers during high-risk situations until appropriate emergency field units arrive on scene.
  • Transfers caller to proper agency as determined or dispatches a variety of emergency equipment to include police, fire, ambulance, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), rescue or hazardous materials units.
  • Provides continuous telephone contact with caller, when appropriate during emergency situations and give instructions regarding what to do, and what not to do, prior to the arrival of pre-hospital care providers.
  • Conducts initial screening to analyze the situation, determining if the request is emergent or non-emergent in nature.
  • Monitors and/or operates electronic security systems involving numerous alarm panels/monitors, callboxes, maintenance-related items, intrusion detection systems, video motion detection systems, and various security alarms.
  • Operates technology in order to perform dispatch duties such as CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch), Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point, and other software programs.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position required the ability to obtain and maintain Secret security clearance.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain, within 6 months of employment, a current Department of Defense (DoD) Telecommunicator I and II (or equivalent), DoD Hazmat Awareness levels and Emergency Medical Dispatch certification.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain, within 3 months of employment, a Louisiana State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Operator Certification.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain, within 6 months of employment, a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
  • This position requires successful completion of a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • This position requires working 12-hour rotating shifts which includes days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • This position requires wearing a uniform.
  • This is a “Mission Essential” position not subject to administrative dismissal in emergencies created by inclement weather conditions or emergency situations as appropriate.
  • This position requires business travel/TDY up to 5% of the time.
  • This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work (1) dispatching fire, police and emergency medical services on the initial response to the scene of an incident; (2) serving as initial point of telephone contact for the public seeking emergency, non-emergency fire, police and/or medical services; (3) preparing and maintaining a properly documented communication log of incoming telephone calls and incoming/outgoing radio transmissions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Proficiency Required: This position requires a typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute (WPM) based on a 5 minute timed sample with three or fewer errors.
