Qualifications
Experience requirements are described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Occupational Series -- 0100 - 0199 - Social Science, Psychology, and Welfare.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: You must have three years of general experience, one year of experience which was equivalent to at least a pay band NH-01, (GS-04), and at a level close to the work of this position that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform. Typically, we would find this experience in work within this field that is closely related. To be creditable, at least one year of the general experience must have been equivalent to the next lower pay band (NH-01) grade level (GS-04) or equivalent. General experience is described as experience that provided a knowledge of the goals, principles, methods, and techniques of recreation, and an understanding of the interests of individuals or groups.
OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successfully completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in a Major study -- general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education from an accredited college or university. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.NOTE: You must submit copies of your unofficial transcripts with your application if using education as a substitution of experience.
OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school and specialized experience directly related to the work of the position as outlined above that meets the requirements of the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.
IDEAL CANDIDATE: 2 years of recreational marketing and promotions experience, 2 years of campground and outdoor facility operations desired, and 2 years of retail resale and inventory management experience is desired. The ideal candidate is a versatile, highly organized assistant leader who excels in outdoor recreation programming, staff supervision, dynamic marketing, and financial accountability to support-and occasionally step in for-the Outdoor Recreation Director.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Ability to plan, implement, evaluate and lead a full-range of Outdoor Recreational programs and activities, such as backpacking, rock climbing, alpine skiing, shooting activities, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, and paint-ball to meet the needs of a diverse population found on a military base.
2. Knowledge of various marketing and publicity techniques to effectively promote programs and events.
3. Knowledge of specific program requirements in a variety of recreation activities, with special emphasis in equipment maintenance and outdoor recreational activities. Current First Aid and CPR certifications required.
4. Ability to independently lead, transport (Class C license required) and communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a diverse group of individuals.
5. Knowledge and ability to recruit, train and lead volunteers APF and NAF employees to safety conduct services for the program.
6. Ability to plan an operational budget and stay within APF and NAF guidelines, as well as, procedural accounting practices and procedures.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
