Duties

Manages the day-to-day operations and administration of the fitness facilities and associated programs by directing complex managers, lead recreation assistants, and recreation assistants. Program responsibilities include branch resource management, complete management of three fitness facilities, one sports complex, maintenance and cleanliness of fitness facilities and equipment, staffing, providing fitness orientations, identifying, and procuring fitness equipment, conducting fitness challenges, management and oversight of fitness programs such as group exercise and personal training programs.

Provides a full range of supervisory duties to include candidate selection, performance management, employee evaluation and recognition, training, and effective leadership. Schedules and assigns work to assigned subordinate supervisory personnel, appraises performance, and recommends personnel actions, as necessary. Identifies training requirements and implements, monitors, and documents a comprehensive training program for personnel. Ensures subordinates are trained in related programs according to each position's requirements and are updated as a result of new equipment, materials, or changes in operations.

Ensures the responsible use of manpower, facilities, and establishment of sound business procedures, hours of operation, scheduling, and development and execution of budgets for assigned facilities. Directs subordinates to ensure facilities and equipment are maintained at a very high level of quality. Responsible for the integrity and efficiency of internal controls and standard operating procedures. Conducts weekly and bi-weekly meetings with subordinate staff and front-line recreation assistants to ensure effective lines of communication is established. Directs Complex Managers and coordinates with Preventive Maintenance Managers in developing a comprehensive cleaning and preventative maintenance annual schedule. Performs weekly facility site visits and inspections with Complex Managers to all fitness facilities to maintain quality facilities, equipment, and services. Reports results and findings to Program Director with corrective action as needed.

Plans and conducts recreation/physical fitness special events. Oversight, through subordinates, of contract fitness instructors, registering students, collection of fees, maintains attendance and appropriate accounting records. Tutoring and mentoring employees; approving and disapproving leave. Recommending and administrating discipline, recommending and administering incentive awards, signing timecards. Serves as Contracting Officer Representative (COR) or Alternate Contracting Officer Representative (ACOR) for all Fitness Contracts. Ensure all safety measures are observed.

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment, being alert to alcohol/drug abuse to take appropriate action.

This is a mixed position where the incumbent must be able to lift and carry objects up to 45lbs independently and objects over 45lbs with assistance.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One year experience in planning, organizing, and administering fitness programs.
  • Two years' experience in supervision and management of health/fitness staff or equivalent leadership experience including providing work direction to other employees. 
  • Possess a current CPR, AED, and First Aid certificate from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or obtain within 6 months of hire.

HIGHLY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Fitness or a related field appropriate to work of the position can be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Possess and maintain a basic level group exercise or personal trainer certification from a nationally recognized and accredited certifying organization or able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Two years of general work experience that demonstrates knowledge of DoD and/or MWR programs, government procurement and recreation management software programs.
