Summary

Support the Military's Quality of Life programs! The Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) department of Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) provides fitness, recreation, lodging and food and beverage programs for service members, their families, retired military and civilian employees. This position operates through the Outdoor Recreation Division aboard NAS Whidbey Island. The employee will guide a variety of outdoor adventure program trips and adventures.

Duties

Activities include but are not limited to hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, mountaineering, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing, and camping. Assist in planning and supervision of outdoor recreational trips, tours, and special events. Incumbent will be required to properly fit and outfit customers with a variety of outdoor recreational rental equipment. Will attend pre-trip meetings; be involved with all post trip evaluations, cleaning, and proper storage of equipment used. May perform maintenance functions on a variety of outdoor recreation equipment; provide information to patrons on outdoor recreation programs, equipment, services, hours of operation, current regulations, and other outdoor recreation information. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass all applicable records and background check.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be available to work days, evenings, and weekends as per trip schedule.
  • Must have a valid state driver's license, CPR/First Aid Certification or obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry program-related gear up to 75 pounds.
  • Work may be performed in extreme weather conditions ranging from long-term exposure to heat and sun to sub-freezing temperatures and wind. Work environment may include rocky steep ice covered terrain and work on, in or near water.

A qualified candidate possess the following:

Possession of a Wilderness First Responder Certificate is desirable. Incumbent must possess leadership/instruction skills at a level to lead or assist in instruction of skill classes, trips, clinics, and workshops. Must be familiar, knowledgeable, and efficient in the use of a computer, GPS, transceiver, and job related electronic equipment. Incumbent must be able to multi-task and work as a team member with other staff and employees. The work may require a high amount of physical exertion while involved with customers in a variety of outdoor recreational activities.
