Summary

This position is located in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Fleet and Family Readiness Program, Fleet Readiness Department in the Fitness/Sports and Deployed Support Department. The purpose of this position is to manage the fitness center program providing fitness training and education at the installation serviced.

Duties

Develops, plans, manages, administers and maintains fitness facilities for authorized patrons. Provides oversight to ensure delivering a program that meets the needs of the patrons. Evaluates present programs and develops goals and objectives for changes or plans for establishing new ones-
Serves as local fitness authority on committees or other bodies engaged in developing programs designed to improve wellness of the military community served.
Prepares and submits input for NAF and APF budgetary requirements, financial reports and justification/support documentation necessary to implement and maintain the fitness programs. Ensures that inventory levels are adequate and that operations are consistent with MWR guidelines and fitness facility standards.
Establishes and maintains intemal controls over all fitness property, equipment and supplies. Maintains all property management records hand receipt files and property location information.
Ensures that instructions, demonstrations and supervision are conducted to assist patrons in the proper exercise techniques for free-weights, resistance equipment and cardiovascular equipment to include proper warm-up and cool down. Ensures all patrons are briefed on the rules and regulations of the Fitness Center and reinforces as necessary.
Program may include a variety of fitness classes, and incumbent must keep up to date on the latest techniques and developments.
Responsible for scheduling, developing, and may instruct personalized fitness training programs. Suggests means for modifying cardiovascular risk factors and weight loss, improvement in strength, flexibility and generic nutrition without advising patrons on medical conditions or acting in the capacity of a medical doctor or physical therapist. Ensures patrons have received indoctrination for the resistance equipment prior to using the Fitness Center. Answers questions regarding programs offered through the Fitness Center and/or other MWR Facilities/services available to the patron. Establishes and maintains files, records and logs by way of a computer database.
Performs routine inspection of fitness equipment, continually checking the cleanliness of the equipment and facility. May perform minor repairs to equipment using repair manual procedures, reporting any broken equipment and ensures any malfunctioning equipment is properly secured until repaired.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate :
Must possess the skill and ability to provide fitness training and programming to the patrons.
Knowledge gained through relevant experience, which enables the employee to competently and independently carry out continuing fitness programs through proper application of the principles, concepts, and techniques of fitness to the specific needs of the fitness center patrons.
Knowledge of the fitness programs offered, including aerobics, strength conditioning and nutrition, and of participant interests.
Skill to provide programs to meet the physical development and recreational needs of the military and other members of the community.
Knowledge of and skill in the maintenance and use of fitness equipment to maintain equipment in optimum operating condition and ability to provide instruction on safe and proper use.
Skill in effectively managing and utilizing all available resources (personnel, supplies and equipment) within a fitness facility.

Education

A bachelor's degree in recreation with a major in exercise physiology, physical education or related field with specific training and understanding of all forms of exercise, nutrition and wellness, or coursework towards such a degree is strongly preferred.

Combination of education, training and experience in physical education with a concentration in exercise science and/or a fitness related area sufficient to manage a fitness facility and associated programs independently is required. Experience must include familiarity/instruction using a wide range of fitness equipment including resistance and/or selectorized machines, computerized cardiovascular equipment and free weights.
