The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). At the VAMC Altoona, we embrace patient-family-centered care principles, prioritizing the care of Veterans. The incumbent is expected to practice exemplary customer service in all work activities, treating Veterans, their families/representatives, visitors, and other employees with courtesy, tact, and respect.

The incumbent must be willing to work cooperatively as a team member in all assignments, demonstrating positive, effective communication skills and professional behaviors that promote cooperation and teamwork with internal and external customers. Effective professional communication with co-workers is essential, as well as encouraging and supporting patients and families in care and decision-making to the degree they choose. Empowering patients to make personal choices related to their care is fundamental to Veteran-centric care.

The practice and promotion of the belief that caregiving is best achieved through kindness and compassion are essential, recognizing that families, friends, and loved ones play a vital role in the healing process. The incumbent is self-directed in seeking out colleagues to share patient-related information and can articulate unit-based performance improvement monitors and results. They are able to analyze these results and participate in targeted unit-based performance improvement activities to enhance patient care, making changes to their own practice in response to performance improvement findings.
