Summary

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organizations. ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.

Duties

  • Will focus research efforts on management practices and dietary factors that influence greenhouse gas emissions in beef cattle.
  • Evaluates the impact of management systems, and supplementation strategies on enteric methane and other greenhouse gas emissions from beef calves.
  • Develops treatments applied, conducts research, and publishes the research results during their postdoc program under the guidance of their Postdoctoral Mentor.

Qualifications

This position requires a recent Ph.D (within the last 4 years) in Animal Science, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Desired skills include:

  • Professional knowledge of nutrition, muscle biology, physiology, and/or biochemistry; and a working knowledge of anatomy, animal husbandry, and statistics.
  • A high level of creativity and originality to conduct, interpret, and translate results into scientific publications and technology useful to the animal industry.

Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Basic Requirements

  1. Degree: animal science, dairy science, poultry science; or a related discipline or field of animal science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic biological and agricultural sciences, and 20 semester hours in animal science.
    • For animal scientist positions, at least 10 of the required 20 semester hours in animal science must have been in courses dealing with the breeding, feeding, production, and management of livestock, and the care and preparation of their products.
    • For dairy scientist positions, at least 10 of the required 20 semester hours in animal science must have been in dairy science.
    • For poultry scientist positions, at least 10 of the required 20 semester hours in animal science must have been in poultry science.
OR
  1. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in the basic biological and agricultural sciences, including a minimum of 20 semester hours in appropriate animal science subjects, as described in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
