This is an interdisciplinary position. If selected for the position, you could be hired as a GS-0408-12 Research Ecologist or GS-1530-12 Research Statistician Biology.

In this position, you will:

• Conduct research integrating ecology with statistical and mathematical modeling to understand, manage, and conserve species and populations.
• Formulate and publish research findings and conclusions in the fields of ecology, conservation biology, quantitative ecology, and statistics.
• Manage funding and implement a productive scientific research program.
• Serve as a subject matter expert providing scientific information, technical advice, and training on the application of advanced statistical, quantitative, and modeling tools used in ecology and conservation research.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this Ecologist/Statistician, GS-0408/1530 position, applicants must meet the Basic Qualifications (listed in I, or II) AND the specialized requirements noted below. This is an interdisciplinary position, and qualifications may be met through one of the following professional research occupations.

I. GS-0408:

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: 

Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

II. GS-1530:

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B to satisfy the basic education requirement for Statistics.

A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

B. Combination of education and experience — courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as developing, planning, and conducting original research that integrates ecology with statistical and mathematical modeling to understand, manage, and conserve species.

• Skilled in ecological and conservation science principles, research methodologies, and population dynamics used to study and conserve species and ecosystems.
• Knowledge of quantitative ecology, statistical modeling, and wildlife population dynamics.
• Skilled in identifying funding opportunities and securing financial support for quantitative ecology research programs.
• Ability to translate complex research findings and ecological data into practical recommendations that support conservation and management decisions.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
