The primary purpose of this position is to personally perform and assist senior technicians in performing work in a variety of safety programs; assist with and perform administrative support duties related to the safety program; and serve as liaison with personnel and manpower on issues for the safety office.

Duties

  1. Assists in planning and executing routine investigations of minor reportable and non-reportable mishaps involving personal injury accidents, property damage covering a wide range of work and recreational operations.
  2. Maintains safety records and assists in planning, administering, and scheduling the quarterly Environmental, Safety and Occupational Health Council (ESOH) and Traffic Safety Working Group meetings and related activities.
  3. Performs other clerical and administrative work in support of the wing safety office.
  4. Serves as the organizational point of contact and liaison on military and civilian personnel issues.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-0019, Safety Technician Series.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes (l) identifying, preventing, or eliminating safety hazards in work methods or environmental conditions; or (2) safety training or promotion. Such experience must have provided a practical knowledge of occupational and environmental safety hazards, survey techniques, and control and preventive methods. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: biological technician, medical technician, engineering technician, fire prevention inspector, and environmental health worker.

EDUCATION: Applicants must have successfully completed one full year of graduate education leading to a degree in a field that is directly related to the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of official transcripts.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of official transcripts.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-06 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  1. Knowledge of established safety and occupational health principles, methods and techniques sufficient to independently performing recurring assignments of a conventional nature to control or eliminate hazardous conditions and mechanical risks which may cause injury to persons or damage to property.
  2. Practical knowledge of the body of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to safety and occupational health to interpret and explain the reasons and purposes for applying corrective/preventive measures and procedures.
  3. Knowledge and skill to apply practical statistical methods, procedures and techniques to the collection, processing, compilation, computation, analysis, editing and presentation of statistical data.
  4. Knowledge of database, spreadsheet, word processing, PowerPoint and graphics programs and the ability to develop and prepare tables, charts and graphs for presentation or publication.
  5. Skill in operating desktop computers to maintain data bases and produce reports and correspondence.
  6. Knowledge of general administrative regulations, pertinent personnel regulations, and the Air Force budget process. Ability to plan and organize work and meet deadlines.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE MEMBERS: The VOW Act requires federal agencies to treat an eligible active duty service member as a veteran, disabled veteran, and preference eligible (as applicable) when applying for civil service positions before the effective release or discharge date. Appointment of military members before the release or discharge date is permissible if the member is on terminal leave.
