Duties

Operates a School Bus for the Youth Center with a capacity of 36 passengers or 24 passenger capacity with additional special seating section for handicap passenger¿s, to predetermined specific routes, arriving at and departing at appointed scheduled times.  

May also determine routes to be followed or and identify acceptable alternative routes for use in 
emergency situations.  Driving situations that may be encountered include highly congested traffic locations and high-speed highways/freeways.  

Follows established administrative procedures such as checking passengers against manifest prior to leaving and returning.  Notifies Youth Activities Director of any delays or unusual situations as soon as situation allows.

Complies and observes all local, state and government traffic regulations and conditions, ensuring the safety of School Bus passengers and the vehicle.

Maintains trip records and or logs, showing time of departure, trip mileage, gasoline, diesel fuel, and oil consumption, etc.  Reports any defects in School Bus vehicle operations, accidents, damages, traffic violations or passenger incidents.

Responsible for ensuring School Bus is ready for use, makes operational vehicle safety inspections prior to departure.  During trips performs routine servicing such as pumping gas, adding oil and coolant, etc.  Maintains record of work performed while in route, keeping all credit card receipts for expenses.  Performs custodial duties cleaning vehicle inside and out prior, during and after returning to base.

Assists passengers as needed, may assist with carry-on baggage, answers questions and provides information concerning trip.  Maintains good order during trip to ensure safety and enjoyment for all passengers.  Provides courtesy and quality customer service at all times.

EVALUATIONS:

Qualifications

Must have a current California Driver¿s License, Class C and a clean driving record.  California Driver¿s License, Class B with passenger endorsements and valid school bus certification (36 hours classroom training and 24 hours training behind the wheel of a bus) preferred or must be able to obtain a required California¿s Driver¿s License, Class B and School Bus Certification upon hire and prior to bus driving (training will be funded in such instance).  Must have a current CPR and First Aid Certificate or be able to attend the first available class.  Ability to follow written and oral instructions.  

Preferred Abilities: Knowledge and skilled in the use of additional forward speeds and driving wheels, the use of controls and the brakes and gearshifts when going down grades; knowledge in turning radius, clearance, braking distance of the vehicle and correct following distance; mechanical abilities to be able to make minor repairs.  

RESPONSIBILITY:  Works under the direct supervision of the Youth Activities Director.  Directions may be received from the Youth Activities Supervisor in the absence of the Youth Activities Director.  The Youth Activities Director outlines what the departmental goals and incentives are, while the incumbent assures that all assigned duties are personally met and achieved.  The incumbent is responsible for the safety and well-being of the School Bus passengers to arrive at the destination safely and on time.  Work is evaluated through the driver's safety record and meeting assigned transportation schedules.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:  Majority of time is sitting with limited movement; however, reaching, bending, turning, lifting up to 50 lbs. may be required.  Physical effort is required in turning and controlling vehicle.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed on military base/installation and city streets.  May be required to drive on busy freeways.  The incumbent is exposed to all kinds of weather conditions.  There is the possibility of injuries because of traffic accidents.

Must be able to obtain and maintain TIER-1 Child Care (CNACI) background checks which are required for positions that involve working with children under 18 years of age.  Must pass a pre-employment physical and annual physicals thereafter, provide evidence of immunization and be free from communicable disease.  Must complete all DoD training requirements within the specified time including orientation, initial, and annual ongoing training requirements, and required certifications, if any.  

NOTE: This position is identified as a Test Designated Position (TDP). The incumbent is subject to random drug testing because duties must be performed with a high level of productivity, reliability and judgment to prevent adversely affecting personnel safety, and causing risk/damage to government property, and/or significant adverse impact to day-to-day operations. A positive drug test, or failure to submit for testing, may become the basis for removal from this position.
