Duties
Some of the duties associated with this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Schedule and assign tasks to ensure consistent coverage of all duties.
- Monitor and evaluate the amount, accuracy and timeliness of work production.
- Ensure condition and maintenance of all equipment and supplies.
- Provide adequate orientation and training in the duties of the department, safety requirements, VA mandates and other applicable rules and regulations.
- Manage employee time and attendance.
- Oversee problem resolution presented by subordinates, and when necessary, initiate disciplinary action.
- Assess the impact of any issues or problems within the department and advise management.
- Develop and maintain functional statements and performance standards.
- Conduct ongoing employee evaluation, including performance appraisals.
- Assist in recruitment, interview and selection of candidates.
- Perform supervisory and/or managerial duties and responsibilities in the absence of another Supervisor, Assistant Chief or Chief of SPS.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- English Language Proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.
- Experience and/or Education:
- (1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
- (2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
- (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must also be the grade requirements.
- Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
- Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
- Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds.
- Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed.
- Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME.
- Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-08.
Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the position can include such physical exertion as standing for long periods of time, walking throughout the medical center, stretching and bending, lifting up to 30 pounds while conducting physical inventories in the sterile storage room and retrieving items for shelves and cabinets. The position also requires time spent at a desk or computer. Work is primarily supervisory and managerial; however, the incumbent may need to perform decontamination and/or sterilization processes and procedures based on the organizational needs. The technical work may include working with and/or moving equipment, carts or machines.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
