Summary

These WG-3566-04 Custodial Worker (Motor Vehicle Operator) positions are located at Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah.

These are Full-time, Temporary, Seasonal appointments not to exceed 1,039 hours.
Anticipated Winter Season: November 2025 - May 2026

Appointments to these positions are restricted to veterans' preference eligibles unless there are no qualified preference eligibles available or qualified. Duties

  • This position performs the full range of custodial work including: cleaning and servicing vault toilets, buildings, campgrounds, and emptying trash receptacles.
  • These positions are required to operate a government vehicle to perform assigned work and may provide general labor assistance to others in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc.
  • These are uniformed positions and must be able to respond to visitors politely.

Physical Effort: Moderately heavy physical effort is required when: using ladder and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, ceiling fixtures, etc.; operating powered equipment; removing cans of or other containers of trash; and occasionally lifts objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Usually works indoors in areas, which normally have adequate, heat, light, and ventilation. Is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. Occasionally works outdoors in possible inclement weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures.

  • UNIFORM: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • WORK SCHEDULE: You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and/or shift work.
  • DRIVER'S LICENSE: If selected for a position/location required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional information

Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally hot with daytime high temps ranging from 95 to 110 degrees in summer and 55 to 10 degrees in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 65 degrees in summer to 10 degrees in winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale located two (2) miles from Park Headquarters. A full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious, and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George (45 miles), and in Cedar City (63 miles). Elementary school (grades K-5) is available in Springdale with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane, with bus service provided. Utah Tech University is located in St. George and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City.

Park / Government housing is available.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.
