Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.
Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.
Physical Demands: The work of this position involves standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and climbing ramps and cramped ladders, which are often wet. The incumbent is required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, and work in cramped positions and lift, carry, and store heavy items (cargo). Items weighing up to 50 pounds are lifted frequently, and cargo weighing over 100 pounds may also be frequently handled (winch assistance is available in most instances). Work is often performed while standing for long periods and the incumbent is subject to constant motion from the movement of the vessel.
Working Conditions: This position works on vessel decks and is exposed to sun, wind, spray, and rain when mooring, unmooring, loading, and unloading cargo. The incumbent works inside vessels while they are underway, but may also work outside on deck to check equipment and handle lines during mooring and departure. The incumbent is outside when operating small craft and is exposed to occasional harsh winds and extremes of wind chill factors during winter operations. The incumbent is exposed to hot, cramped quarters when working in engine rooms. Noise and vibration on vessel's decks and bridge when underway are constant. Engine room noise is loud and requires hearing protection. Some air pollution or skin hazards may be encountered while working around vessel fuels and solvents or when exhaust from boat blows back on vehicle or when engaged in painting. Hazardous conditions may also occur when decks are pitching during high seas and/or waters, or when they are wet or have snow or ice. The incumbent is exposed to possible falls on deck and to the possibility of falling overboard. A life jacket is worn at all times while underway.
