- A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Physical Demands: Periodic duties require strenuous physical effort associated with setting up field camps and assisting with field work in rugged areas. Strenuous hiking, backpacking, and travel will be required through terrain including tundra, brush, forest, loose rock, steep rock walls, snowfield, and glaciers. The position must be able to handle small boats in unpredictable waters and learn how to conduct oneself on larger vessels. The position must be willing to travel small single engine aircraft over parts of the park which are inaccessible by other means. Data management, radio and phone communication, and report writing requires sustained periods of concentration in an office setting.
Working Conditions: The work environment varies widely from a basement office setting to remote, rugged field and marine conditions. Field conditions may include considerable rain and now, freezing temperatures, slick rocky and icy conditions, exposure to crude oil and other hazardous materials, biting insects, camping in bear country, travel in boats over rough seas, travel in low-flying aircraft, and crossing streams and rivers on foot. The incumbent must have safety training prior to participation in any hazardous activities. The NPS uniform is worn while on duty.
