Duties
Major Duties- Maintenance Mechanic Leader - Colorado River District (Grand Lake, CO) The incumbent is responsible for applying journeyman level trade skills in operations, maintenance, and rehabilitation of all buildings, utilities, grounds, and roads in the Colorado River District of Rocky Mountain National Park in Grand Lake, Colorado. This includes 62 buildings (22 are historic), five water treatment/distribution systems, six wastewater treatment/collection systems, one fueling system, 24 miles of paved road, 8 miles of unpaved road, 9.5 acres of parking lots, 7 bridges, and 66 acres of grounds. In the absence of the CRD Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, the incumbent serves as Acting, supervising CRD employees and day-to-day operations. As necessary for backup purposes, or to meet peak or unique demands, the incumbent performs all other fieldwork. In addition, the incumbent assists with asset and financial management, payroll, internal control of crews, and ensures safety of maintenance field crews.
Physical Effort: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50-100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. This requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and cramped positions.
Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling frail) ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. The incumbent's clothing may become soiled from grease, dust, and chemicals. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falling, bums, broken bones and chemical vapors, constant noise, rotating machinery, dust, grease, chemicals, oil, fumes and infectious blood pathogens when working in or about systems. Incumbent may also be exposed to energized circuits, electrical shock, burns, electrical rotary devices, cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and bums from chemicals. The incumbent is required to wear prescribed safety equipment and to adhere to safety rules and regulations, and standards as set by OSHA and the Park's established Safety Plan. Snowmobile operation is occasionally required for winter operations at some park locations. Must possess a valid State Driver's License.
Area Information: Established on January 29, 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park is a living showcase of the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. The park embraces 415 square miles of pristine, uninhabited mountains in north-central Colorado and, as such, is one of the most spectacular, yet easily accessible high mountain areas in North America. With elevations ranging from 7,800 feet at park headquarters to 14,259 feet at the summit of Longs Peak, the park has glacier-sculptured valleys, rugged gorges, alpine lakes, and vast areas of alpine tundra. Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved continuous road in the United States, stays above tree line for 11 miles and reaches 12,183 feet in elevation. Elk, deer, bighorn sheep, moose, coyotes, and smaller animals are found throughout the park, as well as threatened and endangered species, such as the Greenback Cutthroat Trout and Boreal Toad. Due to the park's easy accessibility to the Front Range communities of Colorado, Rocky experiences over 4 million visitors annually. This position will be filled on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. The nearest community is Grand Lake, CO, which has K-12 schools, a post office, restaurants, medical facilities, and grocery stores. Denver, CO which has a major airport, cultural events, and several professional sports teams is less than a two-hour drive away.

- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.
- You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
- You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
- Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
- Ability to Lead or Supervise: Ability to lead or supervise maintenance mechanics equivalent to the WG-10 level. Experience demonstrates my potential ability to lead by meeting the following 4 factors: 1.) Ability to communicate 2.) Integrity 3.) Willingness to accept policy 4.) and knowledge of Maintenance Mechanic work in at least two of the follow trades (Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing, Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic, Utilities Systems Repair-Operator and Engineering Equipment Operator).(SCREEN OUT)
