Duties
- Incumbent assists in the maintenance, repair, and stabilization of sites built of stone and mortar.
- Assists in mixing soils, water, and amendments for mortars as prescribed.
- Removing damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage stabilization and original fabric, as directed by supervisor.
- Implementing prescribed preservation treatments (capping, veneering, re-pointing, resetting, new laying, etc.).
- Recording the location, time, materials, and labor involved in the treatment process.
North Rim Area Information:
The North Rim District is located on the rim of the Grand Canyon amidst the vast public lands of the Arizona Strip. It is approximately 20 miles from the South Rim by a strenuous hike through the canyon or a 215-mile drive (about 4 hours). The nearest full-service community is Kanab, Utah, roughly 80 miles away. At an elevation of about 8,200 feet, the North Rim enjoys a mild summer climate, with daytime highs in the 80s and nighttime lows in the 50s.
Historically, the North Rim welcomed around 500,000 visitors between May 15 and October 15. The area featured a robust concession operation, including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, guest cabins, a general store, post office, gas station, campground, and mule ride concession. In July 2025, the Dragon Bravo Fire significantly impacted the North Rim, burning over 145,000 acres. This resulted in the loss of key infrastructure, including the historic lodge, visitor center, and multiple administrative and housing facilities. As a result, most of the North Rim was closed for the remainder of the 2025 season, and all visitor services were suspended. Recovery efforts are ongoing, with a focus on emergency stabilization, cultural resource protection, and long-term restoration planning.
Despite these challenges, the North Rim remains a vital part of Grand Canyon National Park. Employees working in or for this district will be part of a dedicated team contributing to the recovery and reimagining of a treasured landscape. The post-fire environment presents unique opportunities for innovation, stewardship, and resilience.
Recreational opportunities in the region remain abundant, including hiking, running, climbing, canyoneering, rafting, road and mountain biking, and skiing. Nearby destinations such as Zion National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument are all within a half-day's drive.

South Rim Area Information:
These positions are stationed at Grand Canyon National Park at the South Rim located in Northern Arizona. The South Rim is located approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 82 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 90 degrees in the summer to 0 degrees in the winter. Annual participation averages around 13 inches.
Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, churches, a recreation center with gym, a public library, a clinic with resident physicians, and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,500 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Flagstaff has a population of about 75,000 and has multiple K-12 public and private schools, Northern Arizona University, and diverse community, medical and other support services. Recreational opportunities include hiking, backpacking, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.

- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.
- You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally.
- You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
- You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
- You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid state-issued driver's license.
- Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Physical Effort: Assignments involve strenuous exertion including hiking, climbing steep slopes, bending, lifting objects up to 50 pounds unassisted, stooping, bending, and kneeling. Some of this work is done on ladders or scaffolding 5 to 25 feet above the ground.
Working Conditions: Assignments are performed outside, often during inclement weather, and often in the company of insects and rodents. Some contact is necessary with chemical agents in the form of cleaning fluids and preservation compounds, some which are considered hazardous.
