Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to assist journey level tree trimming and removing workers by performing the simpler and more routine duties of trimming, pruning, and cutting down trees on roadways, grounds, construction sites, trails, parks, or other public lands.

Duties

As a Seasonal Tree Worker Helper (MVO), some of the duties you will perform include but are not limited to:

  • Assists higher graded tree workers in felling, bucking, trimming of trees and limbs on trails, roads, parking lots and campgrounds throughout the park.
  • Routinely operates chainsaw, handsaws, pruning tools, landscape tools and rigging equipment in the performance and cleanup of these activities, and has experience organizing and maintaining said tools.
  • Maintains a valid state driver's license and routinely operates light-duty vehicles up to 10,000lbs, often while towing equipment (chippers, stump grinders) or trailers, on public roads.
  • Serves as a flagger and safety lookout during tree operations, and maintains the proper certifications therefor and as required by NPS for chainsaw operations, while observing safety protocols.

AREA INFORMATION:
Voted "The Most Beautiful Place in America" by Good Morning America, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is located in scenic and welcoming Northern Michigan. Known as a four-season recreation destination, the Lakeshore is within an easy one-day drive of several major population centers of the Midwest, including Detroit, Chicago, and Cleveland. Housing, medical facilities, shopping, churches, banks, daycare, and recreational opportunities are readily available within a 30 mile radius from park headquarters in Empire. High temperatures average between 80-90 degrees in the summer and low temperatures average between 10-20 degrees in winter. Homes are available for purchase or for rent in the commuting area.   • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

SCREEN OUTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Performed work trimming trees; experience in the use of chainsaws and axes to fall, limb, and buck trees; used stump grinding machines; maintained tools and equipment in a safe and usable condition; and used rope and cable for tree rigging and removal. Work must have been performed without more than normal supervision.

DRIVER'S LICENSE:You must possess and maintain a current Class C, Driver's License by entry on duty.

Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Physical Demands: You are required to use heavy physical effort to operate chain saws, and to move logs, brush, etc. Frequent lifting and moving objects weighing up to 75 pounds is required while loading trucks, handling equipment, moving limbs, etc. The work performed frequently involves standing for long periods of time, walking long distances in difficult terrain, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting and working in awkward positions/environments.

Working Conditions: Work is performed outside in a variety of vegetation types, elevations and conditions. Terrain ranges from flat to steep, rocky, and covered in downed logs, limbs, and vegetation. Work is occasionally performed in bad weather and often in extreme temperatures. Special care must be taken when operating equipment. You are continually exposed to dirt, saw dust, petroleum products, falling limbs/trees, etc. To reduce the dangers from these conditions, you must follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment.
