Duties
The Security Assistant will initiate and carry out a variety of complex duties such as monitoring and directing police officer's response to emergency and non-emergency criminal activity, security and life safety matters, communications, radio dispatching , telephone, fire and security computer systems. Sends and receives messages via the National Crime Information Center Computer Terminal (NCIC). The Security Assistant is responsible for operation of Security Surveillance Television (SSTV) systems, PIV system, telephone and alarm systems. A precondition for access to federal and state data bases, the individual must not have a felony criminal history, and must undergo yearly criminal history checks.
- Receives and complies information from various sources related for police and emergency incidents, takes appropriate action regarding fire, intrusion, duress and hold-p alarms, and directs patrol responses and/ or notifies responsible personnel depending on the type of incident or request.
- Knowledge of agency policy, procedures, technical manuals, and instructions for processing incoming and outgoing messages.
- Performs work related to the collection, organization, and /or tracking of information in support of the security and enforcement programs.
- Provides information to employees and the public concerning ticketing information and furnishes traffic directions.
- Provides immediate and courteous directional and / or assistance to patients, visitors, and employees.
- Personal contacts are frequently made by phone with surrounding municipal, federal and state officials; persons contacted at this facility include employees, staff physicians, resident physician, service chiefs, patients, outpatients, applicants, and visitors.
- Meets the needs of customers while supporting the VA mission. He or she must ensure that all requests for assistance or information are always provided in a courteous and professional manner to all patients, volunteers, visitors and employees.
- Handle conflict and problems in dealing wit the customer constructively and appropriately.
- Maintains accurate radio/alarm activity records/logs to include dates, times, and results of communications and activity.
- Conducts hourly radio station identification code checks as requires by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and radio checks every 30 minutes with uniformed police officers and information officers.
- Operates a wide variety of communication systems and related security equipment, such as computers, PIV, the National Crime Information Center Computer Terminal (NCIC), and other communications systems.
- Monitors 553 security surveillance cameras and detects criminal activity in progress, specious behavior patterns, observes suspects, and known offenders, takes supporting law enforcement action and continuously monitors that person until they are intercepted and detained.
Work Schedule: 7:00 am to 7:00 pm (rotating monthly, including weekends and holidays; schedule may change at the discursion of facility needs)

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
- Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Performing tasks associated with organization's security programs and procedures; providing administrative and clerical support in an office setting; responding to customer inquiries in person, by email or over the phone; Performs work related to the collection, organization, and /or tracking of information in support of the security and enforcement programs; receives and complies information from various sources related for police and emergency incidents; knowledge of agency policy, procedures, technical manuals, and instructions for processing incoming and outgoing messages; provides information to employees and public concerning ticketing information and furnishes traffic directions; provides immediate and courteous directional and / or assistance to patients, visitors, and employees; meets the needs of the customers while supporting the VA mission; conducts hourly radio station identification code checks as required by Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and radio checks every 30 minutes with uniformed police officers and information officers; operates a wide variety of communication systems and related security equipment, such as computers, PIV, the National Crime Information Center Computer Terminal (NCIC), and other communications systems; monitors 553 security surveillance cameras and detects criminal activity in progress and other duties as assigned.
