Summary

This position is located at the Elko Service Unit in Elko, NV. Incumbent performs protective service work in guarding federally owned, leased buildings or property. Incumbent also performs preventative maintenance and/or necessary repairs of leased equipment and buildings.

Duties

  • Patrols the area facility, checking door locks, alarms, fences, gates or other barriers. Patrols include the interior and exterior checks of the installation to detect faulty fences and detection equipment, trespassing violations and attempted thefts.
  • Controls access by monitoring the identification for individuals/employees entering controlled areas, and refers persons who lack proper credentials to control point to arrange access.
  • Relays messages, maintains logs and dispatches personnel and equipment to meet emergency situations.
  • Monitors alarm systems, closed circuit television systems, surveillance cameras, and telephone and radio networks.
  • Performs preventative maintenance tasks within allocated completion period to meet security and safety compliance standards. Includes, but not limited to, preventative maintenance and repairs on issued equipment and buildings within facilities government-owned or leased by the Elko Service Unit.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

On-call hours or standby duty may be required.

Physical demands require considerable and strenuous physical exertion in the performance of duties while in pursuit and search activities; and defending oneself or others against physical attacks and violence posing a threat to public safety.

Work regularly includes assignment to 12-hour shifts, night shift or rotation shifts, including weekends and holidays.

This position requires ability to drive a large government vehicle (Mobile Clinic) and maintain a current U.S. Motor vehicle operator license.

INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Note: Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veteran's preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-0085-05:
Your resume must demonstrate at least 1 (one) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
General
  • Specialized Experience: Experience such as: Protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life; locking doors and gates of entrances and exits to secure federal buildings; answering alarms and investigating disturbances; monitoring and authorizing entrance and departure of employees, visitors, patients and other persons; patrolling premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion; circulating among visitors, patients, or employees to preserve order; responding to medical emergencies, bomb threats, fire alarms, or intrusion alarms, following emergency response procedures; training subordinate security officers in rules and procedures; communicating security status, updates, and actual or potential problems; and providing leadership to subordinate security officers.

Training: Successful completion of training in an accredited technical school that covered subjects such as physical security procedures, local laws, or investigative techniques is considered qualifying for specialized experience at the GS-4 level on a month-for-month basis.

Additional selection(s) of candidates may be possible within 240 days from the date the certificate of eligibles was issued for this announcement.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

Recruitment and/or Relocation Incentives may be authorized and is subject to availability and service unit approval. If offered, you will be required to sign a one (1) year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the service agreement will result in repayment of the incentive.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
