Summary

This Senior Social Worker position is assigned to a 20-bed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (PTSD RRTP) in the Eastern Colorado Health Care System. The PTSD RRTP is a specialty care residential treatment program for Veterans with PTSD from military service. The PTSD RRTP falls within the Inpatient and Acute and Residential Programs Mental Health Section of the Mental Health Service.

Duties

The PTSD RRTP provides a complex spectrum of specialized psychosocial care, including evaluation, treatment, and case management in a 24-hour residential setting. The primary goal of the PTSD RRTP is to provide treatment and rehabilitation services to Veterans with complex Mental Health needs. Veterans served by the PTSD RRTP often have co-occurring psychosocial needs in areas such as employment and housing. They may also have co-occurring medical concerns. Veterans treated within the PTSD RRTP present a level of complexity and acuity which requires the additional support and structure of a residential setting. Rehabilitation is accomplished through services designed to improve functional status, sustain treatment gains, promote recovery and community integration, and prevent recidivism.

Senior Social Workers in the PTSD RRTP provide comprehensive social work services to Veterans and their families as part of the PTSD RRTP. Senior Social Workers will assume responsibility for the provision of clinical counseling and psychosocial services to Veterans who are admitted for complex mental health and psychosocial needs. Senior Social Workers will work as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team and are responsible for active participation in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings and Veteran-centered care planning.

Clinical Functions: Incumbent is a social worker assigned to the PTSD Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP). The incumbent will provide direct clinical care, assessment, and treatment. The incumbent is a subject matter expert in psychological trauma, substance use disorders, other mental illness, and/or other complex and diverse psychosocial problems.

Incumbent will act as a consultant for PTSD RRTP staff who serve Veterans with complex mental health needs related to the experience of psychological trauma who display increased risk for disruptive behavior. Senior Social Workers will be assigned and independently manage a caseload of complex Veterans in the PTSD RRTP.

The incumbent has advanced practice skills and judgment. Senior Social Workers have mastered a range of specialized interventions and provide consultation to colleagues, renders professional opinions based on experience and expertise, develops new models of psychosocial assessment or intervention, and incorporates complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment.

Senior Social Workers utilize outcome evaluations and the findings from measurement-based care to improve treatment. The incumbent designs system changes based on empirical findings. The incumbent develops innovations in practice interventions and takes an active role in program development, in collaboration with the PTSD RRTP Program Manager.

Care management responsibilities include the management, coordination, and provision of social work and supportive services to Veterans and/or their families, including provision of individual and group counseling and psychotherapy to Veterans for issues related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, substance use disorder, and other complex and diverse psychosocial problems. The incumbent also provides supportive counseling to family members. These services will occur primarily while the Veteran is enrolled in the PTSD RRTP, but also will include services provided pre-admission and post-discharge. The incumbent:

1. Must have an advanced level of skill and expertise to establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans in the PTSD RRTP and/or their families. The incumbent is able to independently work with Veterans who are experiencing issues related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder who are experiencing a wide range of complicated medical, psychiatric, emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial problems. These therapeutic relationships also extend to family members.
2. Must independently complete thorough psychosocial assessments to determine the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and/or their families. The incumbent must be able to utilize this assessment in facilitating the Veteran's maximum use of treatment for attainment of the highest level of independence that is possible and practicable.
3. Must possess advanced skills and provide best practice interventions related to safety. The incumbent will provide consultation and guidance to PTSD RRTP staff regarding suicide risk assessments, safety planning, dangerousness to others, and other safety- related concerns. The incumbent will collaborate with the Rocky Mountain MIRECC and other national resources to remain aware of best practices for safety assessments and safety planning. The incumbent will import best practices related to safety into the PTSD RRTP and provide guidance to social workers and team members in the implementation of best practices.
Work Schedule: M-F 8:00-4:30 p.m. May be required to work some evenings.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States.
  • English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed.
  • Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a Master of Social Work.
  • Licensure. Senior Social Workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
GS-12 Education and Experience. The candidate must have at least two years of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure and should be in a specialized area of Social Work practice of which, one year must be equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Senior Social Workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. Senior Social Workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty.
  • G-12 Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as Senior Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
  • Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management.
  • Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice.
  • Knowledge in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services and to design system changes.
  • Ability to provide specialized consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients in the service delivery area, as well as role modeling effective social work practice skills.
  • Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the social work profession, and to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the service delivery area.
Preferred Experience: Training and experience delivering Evidence-Based Psychotherapies for PTSD including Cognitive Processing Therapy or Prolonged Exposure
