The following are the duties of this position at the full working level. If this vacancy includes more than one grade and you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and receive training to help you grow in this position.
- Supports multiple managers and groups consisting of professional and technical employees both remotely and on-site as well as performing administrative tasks as needed for the post-of-duty. Accesses various automated data bases to research, analyze and extract information from internal and external sources, subject to different sets of rules, regulations and procedures.
- Utilizes word processing, database, spreadsheet and other software to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, requisitions, requests for personnel actions and legal documents. Reviews outgoing correspondence for proper format, conformance with procedural instructions, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and attachments.
- Manually and electronically prepares folders, case files, acknowledgments, forms, closing documents and transmittal instructions for use by technical employees to assist them in arriving at the final disposition of a case and executing case processing.
- Gathers, summarizes and timely responds to management inquires for case, project and program information. Prepares a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, requisitions and case-related documents such as in regards to requests from higher levels in the organization.
- Receives telephone calls and visitors, determines the nature of the business, gives routine and non-routine information, answers questions in accordance with Service policies and operations or directs callers and visitors to the appropriate person or office.
- Retrieves and controls mail and suspense items, routing them directly to the appropriate person or office for action, follows-up on outstanding controls and researches background information before routing mail to the appropriate individuals. Prepares transmittals, boxes, and ships case files and other business documents.

- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. (Birth certificate showing birth in the U.S; Unexpired U.S. Passport; Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization; or Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen (Form FS-240))
- Undergo a review of prior performance/conduct and an income tax verification. If you are not in compliance, you will be determined unsuitable for employment with IRS.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation, including a FBI criminal history record check (fingerprint check).
- Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
- Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form I-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S. These documents must be unexpired original or certified copies.
Qualifications
Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-6 You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: Experience providing clerical and admin support to multiple managers and groups. Experience operating a variety of software systems to prepare documents, input data, compile/ generate reports and monitor administrative controls. Experience responding/referring taxpayer/customer complaints and inquiries. Experience with using internal regulations, manuals, and directives pertaining to clerical and administrative policies and practices to perform administrative and case processing support functions. Experience applying grammar, spelling and punctuation to prepare reports and correspondence.

PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT (OFFICE AUTOMATION):
In addition to the specialized experience, applicants must also demonstrate a typing proficiency of 40 words per minute. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute (based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors). For this position, you may be asked to participate in a performance test, present a certificate of proficiency from a school or other organization authorized to issue such certificates by the Office of Personnel Management local office, or by self-certifying your proficiency. Performance test results and certificates of proficiency are acceptable for three years. We may verify proficiency skills of self-certified applicants by administering the appropriate performance test at a later step in the process.
