Summary

The Social Worker - Suicide Prevention Coordinator is administratively responsible for the Suicide Prevention Program, a clinical program within the Mental Health Service. They provide direct clinical services with program coordination responsibilities. (S)he must be licensed at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide clinical supervision for subordinate staff to qualify for licensure.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist clinicians and VA facility employees with suicide prevention program implementation and technical assistance to help them better serve Veterans in the field.
  • Provide consultation and representation on all content related to policy and legislative issues impacting suicide prevention policies and programs.
  • Combine partnerships with communities to implement tailored, local prevention plans, Engagement and Partnership Coordinators, and Together with Veterans.
  • Educate policymakers, media members, and community leaders about Veteran-specific suicide prevention practices by providing resources and training on how to prevent Veteran suicide.
  • Build coalitions across sectors to reach Veterans through a variety of networks and at various touch points.
  • Introduce new tools, technologies, and resources, such as the SP NOW and SP 2.0 initiatives, to keep VA on the cutting edge of suicide prevention best practices.
  • Ensures that social work practices in assigned settings is evidence-based and in keeping with recognized social work treatment methods.
  • Provides direct care services as needed. Provides independent and expert clinical psychosocial and case management services in a specialized area of practice to Veterans who tend to have serious and severe crises, may lack any familial and community support, may be poor self-monitors, may frequently fail to comply with instructions or treatment, or may have major deficits in coping skills and require continuing professional psychological support.
  • Provides clinical supervision for licensure or certification.
  • Represents the program in contacts with other agencies and the public.
  • Networks with community agencies in the service of appropriate Veteran referrals to the program.
  • Coordinate treatment and communicate with the care lines to facilitate continuity of care for Veterans.
  • Document social work interventions and activities in patient's clinical record and ensure appropriate hand off when transferring of patient care.
  • Travels where necessary, or as assigned in the capacity of community outreach support. The incumbent will maintain a current, unrestricted driver's license.
  • Acts as a liaison between VA and community resources, to include marketing and public relations duties as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the Basic Requirements as well as any additional grade-level qualification requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Language: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
  • Education: Have a Master's Degree in Social Work from a school of Social Work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of Social Work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A Doctoral Degree in Social Work may not be substituted for the Master's Degree in Social Work. Verification of the degree can be reviewed in CSWE website to verify the Social Work degree meets the accreditation standards for a Masters of Social Work.
  • Licensure. Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice Social Work at the Master's Degree level.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: Social Worker (Program Coordinator), GS-12:

1) Experience and Education: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.

2) Licensure/Certification: Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.

3) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
  • Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
  • Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
  • Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
  • Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).
  • Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.

The full performance level of this vacancy is 12.

Physical Requirements: Traveling throughout the medical center and the community is required, as is performing activities involving sitting, walking, and standing, bending and carrying such items as books, papers, and files. In carrying out responsibilities it may be necessary for the incumbent to travel into the community where he/she conducts interviews with the Veterans, their families, representatives of the community. The incumbent must possess a current, unrestricted driver's license and drive a government vehicle in carrying out professional duties when deemed necessary.
