Summary

The Western NY VA Healthcare System is currently recruiting for one Social Worker Program Coordinator who will be assigned to the Suicide Prevention Program. This position will be responsible in delegating the authority for ensuring local planning and coordination of mental health care is being provided while supporting individuals who are at high risk for suicide.

Social Worker, Duties include:

  • Coordinates, plans, develops, implements and oversees all components of the Suicide Prevention Program.
  • Responsible for multiple programs and initiatives that fall under the suicide prevention arena.
  • Track and report all suicide attempts and completions at the facility.
  • Analysis of data, trending and proposing additional education, process changes and reporting to leadership.
  • Subject Matter Expert to other facilities teams and leadership in assisting on implementing any new process or practices.
  • Identifies high-risk patients and provides case management services in a timely manner.
  • Incumbent is able to coordinates community-based services, including information and referral for additional services from other government programs and community agency programs.
  • Incumbent is able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people from varied backgrounds.
  • Reviews and approves or disapproves leave requests.
  • Ability to teach and mentor staff and students in the area of practice and to provide supervision for licensure or specialty certifications.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the 3 accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
  • Licensure or Certification. You must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
*Exception - For assignments at the GS-9 level, VHA may waive the licensure or certification requirement for persons who are otherwise qualified, pending completion of state prerequisites for licensure/certification examinations. VHA social workers who are not licensed or certified at the time of appointment must become licensed or certified at the independent, master's level within three years of their appointment as a social worker.
  • English Language Proficiency. Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations for Social Worker (Program Coordinator), GS-13:

Licensure Requirement: You must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.

Experience Requirement: You must possess one year of experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to: Serving as the sole practitioner in a specialty program and typically provide direct patient care services in the program area; oversees the daily operation of the program, develop policies and procedures for program operation, and prepare reports and statistics; may be responsible for the program's budget, developing and monitoring staff compliance with practice, standards and guidelines on documentation, workload, data entry, ethical practice and service delivery; provides analysis and evaluation of clinical program data and computerized programs to identify system-wide trends and needs to enhance the quality of service. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency.

In addition to the experience above, you must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Skill in coordinating and implementing one or more specialty program(s), across the facility.
  • Skill in local policy and practice development, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program as prescribed by the program handbook or national directive.
  • Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).
  • Ability to collaborate with internal and external partners to further program goals and enhance patient centered care.
  • Ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties including assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluations; and selection of staff, training, and recommendation of awards, advancements, and when appropriate, disciplinary action.
  • Ability to oversee the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (including fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure and impact on program operations.
