Summary

This position is located within the N92 division of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department. The incumbent reports to and is directed by the Fitness Manager and is responsible for the independent planning, administration and continuous evaluation/improvement of an extensive and effective Sports Program. The purpose of this position is to supervise the assigned athletic facility/facilities and direct facility sports and fitness events during hours assigned.

Duties

Plans and administers a comprehensive sports program and related special events. Responsibilities include team sports programs and activities involving a variety of athletic related, recurring and non-recurring activities such as triathlon, marathons, special and intramural events. Schedules various tournaments and other sporting events. Coordinate facilities and personnel required to support each program or event. Procures necessary equipment and supplies to support the program. Coordinates use of all athletic facilities and equipment associated with scheduled play or special events. Prepares request for publicity material for scheduled sports programs and special events. Arranges and conducts clinics for all intramural sports. Develops guidelines, bylaws, and schedules for intramural league competition. Designs and maintains statistical records on teams and individual performance. Determines winners and runners-up (team and individual), sportsmanship, and most valuable players where applicable. Procures trophies, plaques, medals, and other awards. Evaluates the effectiveness of ongoing sport activities from the standpoint of participants' response, resources, metric and program objectives. Prepares and submits required reports. Utilizes the latest technology to achieve program efficiency. Ensures that playing surfaces are properly maintained, safe and ready to play. Regularly inspects playing areas for repairs, cleanliness, etc. Provides suggestions for renovations or improvement to playing areas. Coordinate events, facilities and equipment maintenance. Assists with the planning, developing and execution of the annual program operating budget. Maintains an unfunded list of supplies and minor properties to assist in maintaining a balanced budget. Other duties as assigned.

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.

  • Must be able to work varied work schedules to include weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Must be able to do considerable walking, standing, and sitting. Bending, crouching, climbing, and reaching may be required to assist at times with cleaning and maintenance functions.
  • Must be able to perform occasional labor such as shoveling, pulling or lifting of up to 45 pounds unassisted.
  • Occasional travel of less than 10% may be required.
  • Must possess an appropriate level of physical fitness to demonstrate proper use of equipment and exercise techniques as required.
  • Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors, with outdoor events requiring exposure to weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • Must have a working knowledge of league and tournament organization and operation as well as knowledge of basic rules of play of major team and individual sports.
  • Knowledge of the range of activities and services and of participant interests and needs typical of a program which enables the employee to develop and conduct a large and exceptionally diversified program in this specialty area.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and the ability to speak effectively, make presentations and conduct training.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of patrons to include military officer and enlisted, foreign military, retired and reserve personnel, military family members and authorized civilians.
  • Training in physical education, exercise science and fitness is desired with a wide range of fitness equipment including resistance/selectorized machines, computerized cardiovascular equipment and free weights.
  • Must be a mature individual with an adequate level of physical fitness, with sound leadership, and both written and verbal communication and interview skills.
  • Considerable tact and diplomacy as well as finesse are required when interacting with staff members and customers to develop goals and objectives for their physical­ conditioning program.
  • Must be able to make decisions quickly and independently while working in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Must reside within the local commuting area.

Education

A bachelor's degree in Recreation, Leisure Studies, Health, Physical Fitness or Exercise Physiology preferred but may be substituted by an equivalent combination of education training and experience. Must possess a minimum of 1 (ONE) year documented experience in sports and fitness. Must have a basic knowledge of principles of exercise plus a working knowledge of the Navy's PRT program.
