Duties

The Statistician is the subject matter expert (SME) and principal staff authority, coordinator, consultant, and evaluator of developing statistical analysis projects that concentrate on identifying leading EOIR practices resulting in improving data reliability, validity, and timeliness in the research, forecasting and reporting of immigration data.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Initiates, plans and directs the methodological and developmental aspects of EOIR survey and data analysis and related specialized statistical research projects.
  • Manages and controls major statistical studies and/or continuing projects.
  • Provides expert technical advice and leadership to supervisor and senior agency officials in the area of statistical design of surveys and statistical analysis.
  • Manages and directs the organization, analysis and interpretation of highly specialized immigration data from nationwide databases.
  • Executes analytical projects to generate statistically valid immigration data, products, and information in support of EOIR objectives to address significant immigration issues.
  • Conducts professional briefings and presentation of methodology, data and findings to address the nature, magnitude, and interrelationships and impact of immigration phenomena on the United States.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for the Statistician position, you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below.

Basic Requirements: All applicants must meet one of the basic requirements listed below.

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. (Must submit transcripts)

OR

Combination of education and experience -- Applicants must possess education containing the courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. In addition to the Basic Requirement listed above, applicants must meet the specialized experience listed below.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one or more full-time years (12-months) of specialized work experience, equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level, performing ALL the following duties:

  • Planning and managing the methodological aspects of statistical research projects;
  • Creating surveys for data analysis purposes;
  • Preparing technical reports upon completion of statistical analyses AND;
  • Presenting information on statistical results to audiences (technical or non-technical).
