Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Steersman ~ without more than normal supervision. I am skilled in performing daily maintenance checks, transferring fuel from tanks and barges, and making routine operating repairs - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Physical exertion is required in lifting heavy parts, tying up barges, etc. May lift up to 50 pounds or more. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and walking. Incumbent must have color and depth perception and be able to see in low visibility conditions in order to navigate a dredge, tenders, towboats and other vessels. Operating the vessel requires standing for long periods with continual hand and eye coordination.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works around moving machinery and floating plant. Physical exertion is required in lifting heavy parts, tying up barges, etc. Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes of heat and cold and heavy rainfall. There is a danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning. On-shore work may involve working in mud, snow, or ice, in dirty or cramped situations. There is danger of injury as a result of snapping cables and lines moving heavy equipment and lifting heavy anchors. There is exposure to traffic hazards, especially at night.
