Conditions of employment
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent will be required to operate a surface vessel, whether powered or not, including dredging equipment, when duties include operating, navigating, steering, directing, or sailing the vessel, or operating the spuds on a dredge.
- Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under the DOT, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.
- Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.
- Position requires a pre-employment and periodic physical examination and/or evaluation under the District Medical Surveillance Program, and may require the use of personal protective clothing or equipment.
- NOTE: During the lay-up season, incumbent may be assigned as a helper or intermediate worker in such trades as painting, welding, electrical repair and maintenance, marine equipment repair, carpentry, pipefitting, etc.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Striker Diesel-Electric ~ without more than normal supervision. I am skilled in regularly scheduled and special observations of pressure and temperature gauges and alarms associated with machinery; preparing shift logs reflecting oil pressures and oil and water temperatures; listening for sounds that indicate abnormal operating conditions to ensure proper functioning of equipment; utilizing various hand tools and measuring instruments, including ammeters, calipers, dial indicators, micrometers, rules, etc; understanding technical manuals pertinent to the equipment and machinery operations. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
- Physical Effort: Considerable physical and mental concentration is required during both machinery operation and lubrication. The work requires continuous standing on the metal decks of the engine rooms and frequent bending and stooping. Work may require moderately heavy lifting and physical effort in moving 120 pounds drums of grease and 55 gallon drums of oil used daily.
- Working Conditions: Works inside and outside in weather that is occasionally disagreeable. Dirt and grease are frequently disagreeable caused by working on equipment in marine hulls. Noise is frequently and intensely disagreeable, caused by working in and around engines, generators, gears, and large electric motors located in holds of floating plant. Fumes and smoke are frequently unpleasant and the wearing of a helmet is occasionally unpleasant. Incumbent is constantly exposed to the possibility of electrocution, cuts, bruises, strains, sprains, crankcase explosions, and drowning. Incumbent is required to observe safety precaution and work in a safe manner to prevent injury to self and others and to prevent property damage.

Employees live in various locations in Missouri and Illinois. Commuting times vary, but are generally no more than 45 minutes one way. Transportation subsidies are available for mass transit users.
