This position is open to federal employees in the competitive service, currently on a career or career-conditional appointment, assigned to the Department of Energy, Office of Inspector General (OIG).
Duties
As a Supervisory Criminal Investigator (Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge (ASAC)), you will be responsible for a wide range of complex duties. Major duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide technical direction and guidance in the planning, coordination, and development of highly complex and sensitive investigations involving suspected fraud, waste, and mismanagement in programs and operations of the Department.
- Make recommendations on investigative programs, goals, and objectives, and/or changes in functions.
- Develop and maintain liaison with external organizations that can provide information, assistance, and investigative continuity on matters of mutual interest.
- Provide advice, counsel, and instruction to employees on administrative matters and on-the-job training.
- Find ways to improve production or increase quality of work directed.

- Completion of the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) or documentation of successful completion of a formal basic special agent/criminal investigator training course of instruction.
- Incumbent must meet requirements for training and qualification with firearms.
- Incumbent may be subject to relocation to another geographic location based on the needs of the organization and mission requirements. A signed Mobility Agreement is required.
- The position requires a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of appointment and must maintain the license while employed in the position.
- Will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
Qualifications
You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date (06/03/2026) of this announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT: In accordance with OPM's Individual Occupational Requirements for the 1811 series, applicants must meet the following basic requirement as determined by a pre-employment physical exam. Medical Requirements: The duties of positions in this series require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must be sufficiently intact and functioning in order that applicants may perform the duties satisfactorily. Sufficiently good vision in each eye, with or without correction, is required to perform the duties satisfactorily. Near vision, corrective lenses permitted, must be sufficient to read printed material the size of typewritten characters. Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz levels. Since the duties of these positions are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any physical condition that would cause the applicant to be a hazard to himself/herself, or others is disqualifying.

EXPERIENCE: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-13) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience that demonstrates ALL of the following:
- Independently planning, coordinating, conducting, and/or leading complex fraud investigative activities (e.g., surveillances, search or arrest warrants, consensual monitoring, undercover operations, interviews, interrogations, collecting and safeguarding evidence, analysis of grand jury material).
- Reviewing and evaluating allegations, information, and/or evidence to recommend appropriate investigative action or establish investigative standards.
- Independently documenting, briefing, and/or conveying investigative information to external and internal customers.
- Establishing and maintaining collaboration with members of the federal law enforcement community, informants, cooperative witnesses, state or local law enforcement or prosecutors, government agencies, and/or public/private organizations to independently facilitate investigative activities.
- Applying knowledge of criminal, civil, and/or administrative statutes, regulations, and procedures (e.g., rules of evidence, search and seizure guidelines, warrant and arrest procedures, warning/assurances/rights advisements, subpoenas, court procedures) to establish facts or evidence.

Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Relocation Incentives: May be authorized, subject to available funding and management approval, to current Federal employees who must relocate to accept a position in a different geographical area.
