Duties may include but are not limited to:

• Serves as a Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist with responsibility for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating the day-to-day operations of assigned diagnostic imaging sections and programs. Supervises technical and support personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care services.

• Assigns, directs, and reviews the work of subordinate staff. Establishes priorities, adjusts workflow, monitors workload demands, and ensures timely completion of examinations and patient services. Resolves operational issues and modifies work assignments to improve efficiency, productivity, and customer service.

• Provides the full range of supervisory functions including performance management, workload distribution, leave administration, employee development, competency assessments, performance evaluations, recognition, corrective actions, and discipline in accordance with applicable VA policies, labor agreements, and regulatory requirements.

• Interviews and evaluates candidates for employment and participates in recruitment, selection, orientation, mentoring, and retention activities. Recommends appointments, advancements, awards, reassignments, and other personnel actions as appropriate.

• Analyzes workload, productivity, quality, and performance data to identify trends, improve operations, support resource allocation decisions, and ensure accomplishment of organizational goals and performance measures.

• Oversees quality management, quality assurance, patient safety, and regulatory compliance activities. Ensures adherence to accreditation standards, VHA directives, Joint Commission requirements, radiation safety practices, manufacturer specifications, and departmental policies and procedures.

• Evaluates imaging equipment, technology, supplies, and operational processes. Recommends equipment purchases, upgrades, maintenance requirements, and workflow improvements to enhance clinical services and operational effectiveness.

• Develops, implements, reviews, and updates section policies, procedures, protocols, and operating instructions. Participates in organizational committees, workgroups, and service initiatives that support the mission and strategic objectives of the medical center.
• Coordinates and supervises staff education, training, orientation, competency assessment, and continuing education activities. Identifies developmental needs and ensures maintenance of required certifications, licensure, and clinical competencies.

• Ensures adequate staffing, supplies, equipment availability, and operational readiness to meet patient care demands. Assists with budget planning, workload projections, resource management, and contingency planning activities.

• Serves as a senior technical resource and independently performs specialized and complex diagnostic radiologic procedures as needed. Provides clinical consultation, troubleshooting, and technical guidance to staff and providers regarding imaging procedures, protocols, and patient care issues.

• Maintains effective working relationships with radiologists, providers, nursing staff, administrative personnel, and other interdisciplinary team members to promote quality patient care and efficient service delivery.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d).
• Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
• Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R).
• Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.
• May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

• Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-11:Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-10 directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a quality control technologist, DRT team leader, supervisory radiologic technologist, PACS technologist, clinical program director], or an assistant chief radiologic technologist. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
• Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation.
• Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage section workload, quality, performance, and productivity.
• Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
• Ability to supervise technologists performing a wide variety of difficult radiographic exams (CT, MRI, Special Procedures, Mammography, Ultrasound).
• Ability to interview and evaluate candidates for positions, evaluate subordinate performance, recommend appointments, advancements, or recommend or take appropriate disciplinary actions.
• Skill in participating in organizational facility initiatives, workgroups, and/or committees.]

Preferred Experience:

• Ability to analyze organizational, technical and administrative problems to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation
• Ability to supervise technologists performing a wide variety of difficult radiographic exams.
• Demonstrates work practice and skills in problem solving and conflict resolution
• Infection Control. Understands, demonstrates appropriate hygiene methods and infection control
• Ability to interview and evaluate candidates for positions, evaluate subordinate performance, recommend appointments, advancements, or recommend or take appropriate disciplinary actions.
