Summary

The Supervisory Dietitian of Clinical Nutrition is the supervisor for the clinical section of Nutrition and Food Services and directs a comprehensive nutritional care program. The Supervisory Dietitian of Clinical Nutrition is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating clinical nutrition and nutritional education programs. Supports facility mission and coordinates clinical nutrition activities with other services and units, clinics, and local community.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Able to perform all duties of subordinate clinical dietitians
  • Advisor to clinical staff, other allied healthcare professionals, program directors and managers
  • Develops, and implements nutrition therapy programs
  • Assists in the establishment of organizational structure guidelines, performance standards, and reporting requirements and assists in defining lines of authority and supervisory controls essential in carrying out the mission of the service
  • Develops strategic planning goals and objectives for the clinical program
  • Develops and implements nutrition care policies and guidelines for compliance with all regulatory agency requirements (i.e., TJC, AND, ASPEN) and specific VHA guidelines
  • Prepares and submits a variety of clinical reports
  • Conducts performance reviews and competency assessments
  • Develops and implements a Performance Improvement Program to ensure provision of high-quality nutrition care
  • Activities of clinical dietitians, which includes nutrition screening, assessment, monitoring, and education
  • Reviews electronic medical records of patients to substantiate that clinical staff meet established guidelines of care that meet the needs of patients
  • Responds to EEO complaints and unfair labor practice charges
  • Ensures that all clinical nutrition staff meet mandatory and continuing education requirements to assure maintenance of registration status

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) - Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
Current VHA Dietitians that qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet the current RDN/RD requirements.

Grade Determinations:

Experience: Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level such as:
  • Staff dietitian at the full performance level GS-11,
  • Registered dietitian responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all nutrition care activities (e.g., food service and/or clinical nutrition).
  • Registered dietitian serving as important member of the interdisciplinary team of care providers, and focus on offering exceptional nutrition care and guidance to optimize health.
  • Registered dietitian working in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, outpatient centers, residential treatment programs and patient homes;
  • Responsible for using evidence-based approaches to develop menus, counsel patients and provide nutrition care.
AND

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the experience and certification above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  • - Knowledge of accrediting requirements in clinical nutrition in order to assess staff compliance and implement performance improvements.
  • Skill in serving as a nutrition expert to provide technical guidance, direction and staff development.
  • Skill in Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guidelines in order to develop, implement and coordinate best practices.
  • Skill in establishing goals and objectives in order to coordinate activities, evaluate accomplishments and solve problems.
  • Ability to supervise subordinate staff (i.e., plan, organize, delegate, direct, control and review activities and performance)
  • Ability to analyze data in order to recommend allocation of resources.

Preferred Experience: Clinical nutrition care and clinical nutrition management experience, and Advanced Practice Credentials from a nationally recognized certifying body such as the Commission on Dietetic Registration are preferred.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12.

Physical Requirements: The work environment involves everyday risks of discomforts, which require safety precautions typical of hospitals, offices, and meeting rooms. Work includes working closely with others. There may be occasional risk of physical harm from a violent resident that may require special precautions and training to deal with. The physical demands of the work requires light lifting under 15 lbs., light carrying under 15 lbs., the use of fingers, and both hands are required. Reaching above shoulder, walking on uneven or slippery surfaces and standing (4 hrs.), outside and inside environments. Near Vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4 & Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20-/40 in the other. Both eyes required, and have Depth Perception, Hearing (aid use is permitted). **Other **(Clear Speech, Emotional Stability). Must be able to work closely with others and work alone as well.
