Summary

The Supervisor Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) - Electrocardiograph Technician (EKG) oversees cardiac monitoring operations, including Holter monitoring, stress tests, and electrocardiography. Performs complex procedures which requires advanced technical and administrative expertise. Supervises subordinate technicians by assigning and evaluating work, providing training, managing performance, recommending promotions or disciplinary actions, and identifying staff development needs.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in managing MIT time and attendance, including approving leave for short hours and emergencies, and ensuring proper leave protocols are being followed.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives to improve patient care and/or unit operations.
  • Training and in-service coordinator for all technicians and/or detailed staff within the program
  • Maintain a current knowledge and answer questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc. and obtain needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that may arise.
  • Evaluation of proper implementation of SOP, daily tasks and equipment operation.
  • Responsibilities includes operating and maintaining equipment, interpreting physician orders, documenting in electronic medical records, and ensuring patient safety and cooperation during procedures.
  • Demonstrates leadership in managing complex systems, with advanced knowledge of MUSE v9 cardiology information systems, and develops policies, procedures, and training protocols.
  • The role demands strong communication, supervisory skills, and the ability to address Veterans' needs while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge and ability to performs cardiac monitoring (holter monitoring, Cardiac stress test procedures, electrocardiography)

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
  • English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Grade Determinations:
GS-9. In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-8 level, positions at this grade may be lead, supervisory, or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments.

(a) Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques such as SAECG, ETT, Tilt table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring, and event monitoring in order to
provide training and supervision in these procedures, to develop analysis interpretation formats, and to receive inquiries concerning results.
*2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
*4. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.
*5. Ability to manage and supervise employees.

(c) Certification. Certification by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) is highly desirable at this level. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
