Summary

This position is located at the VA Medical Center, in the Sterile Processing Service, Durham, NC.

The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician works in support of the Sterile Processing Service management team (SPS). The incumbent is responsible for overall supervision of SPS staff for the decontamination, reprocessing, and Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) inventory management used in the Medical Center and VA clinics.

Duties

The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician directly supports the department by monitoring and evaluation of throughput, quality assurance, and supervisory duties. This position will be supporting the decontamination, preparation and distribution of the hospital's critical and semi-critical reusable medical equipment (RME).Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the direct supervision of day-to-day operations in SPS, regardless of tour of duty, including RME reprocessing for all clinical services and RME inventory management.
  • Incorporates and reports results of quality assurance program on a daily bases or as appropriate.
  • In conjunction with the Educator, the Supervisor will be responsible for operational deployment of a comprehensive training program for all SPS staff.
  • Communicates daily with customers to ensure open communication that results in uninterrupted and consistently accurate flow of necessary RME supplies for procedures.
  • Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets and adjusts short term priorities and prepares schedules for completion of work. Plans and assigns work on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis and adjusts assignments during a work day to alleviate halt points in reprocessing activities..
  • Participates in Interview Panels and makes recommendations regarding hiring decisions.
  • Hears, resolves, and documents complaints from employees, referring group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to a higher-level supervisor or manager.
  • Finds way to improve workflow or increase the quality of work directed and assists in development of performance standards.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, various tour available. Hours may change based on the needs of the service.

United States Citizenship:

Basic Experience and/or Education:
  • Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR
  • Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR
  • Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.

Preferred Experience: Previous supervisory experience in a surgical/sterile processing setting in a medical facility.

GS-08, Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)

Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS 07. Experience described as: Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments; Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations; skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers; knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures; and ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  1. Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds.
  2. Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed.
  3. Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of reusable medical equipment (RME).
  4. Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08.

Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the position can include such physical exertion as standing for long periods of time, walking throughout the medical center, stretching and bending, lifting up to 50 pounds while conducting physical inventories in the sterile storage room and retrieving items for shelves and cabinets. The position also requires time spent at a desk or computer. Work is primarily supervisory and managerial; however, the position may need to perform decontamination and/or sterilization processes and procedures based on organizational needs. The technical work may include working with and/or moving equipment, carts, or machines.
