Sterile Processing Services (SPS) has a primary responsibility in facilities to decontaminate, high level disinfects and/ or sterilize critical and semi-critical medical equipment and instruments. SPS supports the medical facility by ensuring a continuous flow of processed critical and semi-critical instruments to all points of use. Similarly return of reusable soiled items to SPS is handled in a manner that is conducive to patient and staff safety as well as efficient reprocessing for future use. The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician in the Sterile Processing Service Line, supervises Lead Technicians(GS-8), Medical Supply Technicians-Advanced (GS-7) and Medical Supply Technicians/Developmental and Full Performance Level(GS-3,4,5,6). The primary duties of the Supervisory Medical Supply Technician may include but are not limited to:
- Developing duty assignments based on staffing levels, workload and priorities within the department.
- Reviewing subordinates work to adjust assignments and to evaluate learning needs.
- Evaluating employee performance and behavior, and if deficient, will initiate appropriate corrective and disciplinary actions.
- Recommending staffing and shift changes as needed to the Assistant Chief of SPS.
- Developing monthly staffing schedules, approve leave, and maintain attendance records (shift reports).
- Coordinating all operations, priorities and procedures on a daily basis within the Sterile Processing Department.
- Resolving informal customer complaints and follow up as necessary.
- Investigating and resolving employee problems and complaints, providing instruction, guidance and direction to the SPS staff.
- Using MS Word or comparable word processing software to execute several office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files; activating printers; inserting and deleting text; formatting letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving e-mail.
- Using MS Excel or other comparable spreadsheet software to develop and change spreadsheets to graphically display data.
- Using MS PowerPoint or other comparable graphics software to develop presentation materials.
- Using Veterans Health information and Technology Architecture (VistA) to access information in the medical center computer system.
Work Schedule: SPS is 24-hour operations that offers a variety of Monday-Friday shifts. Various schedules will be discussed during the interview process and are subject to change based on Agency needs. Available Shifts are as follows, all are in CST time zone:
7:00am - 3:30pm
8:30am - 5:00pm
11:30am -8:00pm
3:00pm - 11:30pm
8:00pm - 6:00am

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66

Qualifications
To qualify for appointment to this position, all applicants must possess the following:
Basic Requirements:
- Citizenship - You must be a citizen of the United States
- English Language Proficiency - English Language Proficiency - You must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d)
- Experience and/or Education -
- Experience - Six months of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR
- Education - One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR
- Experience/Education Combination - Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Grandfather Provision. A Medical Supply Technician (MST) employed in VHA on the effective date of the qualification standard (May 28, 2014) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply:
- Employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level or changed to lower grade within the occupation but may not be promoted beyond the journeyman level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions.
- Employees who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard.
- Employees who are converted to Title 38 Hybrid status under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of re-entry to the occupation.
- Experience Requirement: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, to qualify for the GS-08 you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07). Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: Distributing and prioritizing workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations; assuring an even workflow and distribution of the workload; revising work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload; assigning work to staff based on experience and training needs; monitoring and reporting on the status of work; reviewing work in progress or spot checking work not requiring review to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions on such things as work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines; assessing the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of technical medical equipment, material and instrumentation.
- Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the experience above, you must demonstrate the following KSAs:
- Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds.
- Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed.
- Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME.
- Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues.
Preferred Experience:
- Knowledge and ability to operate all sterile processing equipment, such as Steam Sterilizer, Low temperature sterilizers, etc.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08.
Physical Requirements: The work performed requires the incumbent to work and perform in various settings to include decontamination, preparation, clear sterile supply and other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. Must be able to walk continuously, sit, stand, squat, bend, push, and pull for 8 hours per day. Must be able to lift/pick up items (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds).
Environmental Factors: Incumbent may be required to work in areas that are warm, cold, or of normal temperatures. On a regular and recurring basis, the employee alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment and will be in contact with cleaning solutions, heat, and High Level Disinfection Solutions. Must be able to work under noisy conditions.
