Summary

Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist serve as the Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. The radiology service provides comprehensive and complex Theranostic and imaging exams. The incumbent will have direct line supervisory responsibility for all Nuclear Medicine Technologists.

Duties

  • Directs and is responsible for the performance of the individual technologists in every modality within the department of Nuclear Medicine.
  • Evaluates performance based on pre-determined standards and recommends appointments, promotions, reassignments, disciplinary actions, as well as identifies continuing education and training needs.
  • Advises employees of performance requirements and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting these requirements.
  • Holds corrective interviews with employees regarding inadequate performance or conduct as necessary.
  • Provides written support and documentation for recommendations to Service Chief for final approval.
  • Provides direction to personnel in managing their respective sections and offers advice and guidance in handling unique problems.
  • Resolves informal complaints of employees or customers and directs them in process of resolution for formal complaints.
  • Regularly sets objectives for self, staff, and department in conjunction with service management and facility goals.
  • Monitors and evaluates objectives, and redirects as necessary, to meet established goals and deadlines effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Meets regularly with Administrative Officer and Service Chief to discuss objectives and goals.
  • Works with union representatives on matters involving action by an immediate supervisor.
  • Implements provisions of personnel management programs where well established procedures exist such as EEO, career development plans, departmental policy and procedures, award and incentive programs, grievance procedures and safety practices.
  • Directs in-service training and radiologic student programs, ensuring staff maintain required certifications and clinical proficiencies through ongoing education.
  • Drives department success by leading the development and communication of policies, facilitating monthly staff meetings, and fostering a collaborative, team-oriented culture across the Nuclear Medicine Department.
  • Directs Nuclear Medicine operations by collaborating with clinical leaders across departments to resolve service issues, optimize patient care, and ensure continuous communication regarding clinical and operational performance.
  • Drives regulatory compliance and operational excellence by leading a comprehensive quality assurance program-overseeing image standards, equipment and staff performance, and protocol updates while utilizing customer and employee satisfaction surveys to design and implement targeted improvement plans.
  • Serves as the first line Patient Representative for resolution of patient care issues or customer complaints.
  • Advises Radiology leadership on equipment and construction, coordinates new project planning and staff training, and directs Nuclear Medicine inventory and supply management.
  • Compiles and analyzes departmental data to prepare administrative reports, while assisting with DSS/CPT code updates and initiatives to improve imaging exams and patient wait times.
  • Maintains NM equipment safety and radiation committee protocols, perform rigorous image quality assurance (positioning/labeling/network), verify PACs transmission integrity, and troubleshoot all imaging and archiving system issues.
  • Reconciles daily image and demographic data archives while monitoring systems to ensure proper data and image acquisition across all modalities.
  • Coordinate end-to-end equipment management-including testing, preventive maintenance, service contracts, and regulatory record-keeping-by collaborating with in-house engineers, external manufacturers, the Administrative Officer, BioMed, the Radiation Safety Officer, and OI&T.
  • Enforce hospital safety, infection control, and radiation protocols while collaborating with the Administrative Officer to develop and maintain technologist policies and procedures.
  • Serves on and leads assigned hospital and departmental committees, providing regular progress updates to the Clinical Manager.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (N). NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification eligibility requirements are normally satisfied by one of the following:
  1. Completion of a NMTCB-recognized nuclear medicine technology program, OR
  2. Completion of a nuclear medicine technology program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT), or other accrediting agencies as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), culminating in a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's degree. Educational programs must have structured clinical training sufficient to provide clinical competency in radiation safety, instrumentation, clinical procedures, and radio-pharmacy, as deemed acceptable by the NMTCB.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist, GS-12
In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must have at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11), directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. The KSAs at the GS-11 grade level are:
  1. Ability to perform complex nuclear medicine studies.
  2. Skill in motivating and mentoring technical and administrative staff.
  3. Ability to develop continuing education standards for nuclear medicine staff.
  4. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with higher level authorities (i.e., National Health Physics Program (NHPP), The Joint Commission (TJC), NRC, Inspector General (IG), executive leadership).
  5. Ability to interview candidates for subordinate positions in the section; recommend appointments, advancements, or, when appropriate, disciplinary actions; evaluate performance; and identify continuing education and training needs.
  6. Ability to forecast and plan for the effective operation of the unit, including staffing, advancing technology, equipment, and resource needs.
In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate allof the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
  1. *Ability to assign and evaluate work of subordinate staff as well as resolve problems that may interfere with the delivery of nuclear medicine services by staff members.
  2. Skill in providing complex nuclear medicine patient procedures.
  3. *Ability to develop and initiate new protocols which apply to current research findings.
  4. *Skill in providing administrative reports both orally and in writing [with higher level authorities (i.e., NHPP, TJC, NRC, Inspector General, executive leadership)].
  5. *Ability to interview candidates for positions in the section; recommend appointments, advancements, or, when appropriate, disciplinary actions; evaluate performance; and identify continuing education and training needs.
Preferred Experience: Supervisory/Lead Technician experience preferred
