Summary

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

The Government-wide direct hire authority for Physical Science GS-1301 is being used to fill this position.

Salary: $146,481 (Step 01) to $190,424 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Duties

As the Center Director within the Astrogeology Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Supervise a staff of over 55 researchers and support personnel.
  • Lead the development and execution of geoscience research into other planetary bodies including mapping and assessing planets' geologic nature, mineralogy, geomorphology, history and evolution and encourage incorporation of those studies in multidisciplinary partnerships.
  • Represent the Centers science, internally and externally.
  • Manage the Center's science portfolio and core capabilities consistent with the agency's mission priorities, including development of projects and completing a variety of science information products.
  • Engage as a team member with other USGS Science Center Directors in the Southwest Region and with Southwest Regional Office leadership to employ science capabilities in the most effective manner with the highest standards of science quality.
Physical Demands
Office tasks are primarily sedentary. The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking or hiking over uneven surfaces; recurring lifting and carrying of equipment and samples up to 50 lbs; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and similar activities.

Work Environment
The position is primarily in the office. Travel may be required to coordinate efforts with scientists, lead outdoor trainings, or for fieldwork. Outdoor training and fieldwork includes area of rough, uneven, rocky, and (or) slippery surfaces. Work also involves moderate risks or discomforts, e.g., adverse weather conditions, such as high winds and low or high temperatures; travel in off-road vehicles; working around moving parts, carts, or machines.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record.   • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

**OR

B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-15 level:

One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Examples of such experience could include:

  • Supervising and (or) providing direction to a group of research scientists undertaking single, multi-, and inter-disciplinary physical science studies especially matters relating to research, monitoring, and assessments of planetary and space science issues;
  • Providing high-level input to a broad program of research studies, including awareness and knowledge of needs of local, regional, and federal level stakeholders as well as the capabilities of partners;
  • Providing oversight of research and operational budget planning, implementation, and administration for a multimillion-dollar research group;
  • Building partnerships across academic and (or) federal, state, and regional agencies in order to foster collaborative research;
  • And demonstrated commitment to research that supports the full breadth of the public good.
