Duties

Major Duties: This is not an all-inclusive list

As a Supervisory Police Officer (INDEF) (TITLE 32), GS-0083-8, you will:

  • Exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities.
  • Advises and provides counsel to employees regarding policies, procedures, and directives of management.
  • Selects or recommends selection of candidates for vacancies, promotions, details, and reassignments in consideration of skills and qualifications, mission requirements, and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and diversity objectives.
  • Explains performance expectations to employees and provides regular feedback on strengths and weaknesses.
  • Appraises subordinate workers performance ensuring consistency and equity in rating techniques.
  • Hears and resolves employee complaints and refers serious unresolved complaints to higher level management.
  • Prepares documentation to support actions taken.
  • Discharges security responsibilities by ensuring education and compliance with security directives for employees with access to classified or sensitive material.
  • Applies EEO principles and requirements to all personnel management actions and decisions, and ensures all personnel are treated in a manner free of discrimination.
  • Represents the Security Forces Flight with a variety of functional area organizations.
  • Establishes, develops, and maintains effective working relationships with the base community.
  • Provides or ensures that subordinates provide customer guidance and training.
  • Evaluates reports by analyzing facts and performing appropriate research and prepares detailed responses.
  • Performs and enforces the full range of police officer duties within the military facility.
  • Incumbent has full powers of apprehension and detention which entails carrying a firearm, operating Security Forces vehicles and
    equipment, mirandizing suspects, preserving evidence and testifying in court as it pertains to enforcing regulations on a military installation.
  • The incumbent is required to meet all requirements of Federal, Department of Defense (DoD), Air Force (AF), NGB, State, and local level rules and regulations to maintain qualification as a police officer whose jurisdiction is only within the confines of the military facility.
  • Directs and supervises the dispatch operation activities involving security force patrols to scenes of crimes, accidents, natural disasters, and apprehensions.
  • Directs and participates in training exercises and evaluations to increase proficiency and update skills and knowledge of organization/flight personnel.
  • Responds to calls for emergency assistance to include traffic accidents, suicides, burglary, robbery, sex offenses, suspicious persons, catastrophic events, scenes of crimes/natural disasters, and possibly murder, and enemy attacks, and makes apprehensions. Acts as the onscene incident commander for significant and catastrophic events as required and initiates Air Force Incident Management System (AFIMS) as needed.
  • Interacts with members of the public to determine their involvement in incidents to include interviewing, advising them of their rights, obtaining statements, and detaining or apprehending violators.
  • Performs traffic duty to include operating radar detection devices, directing traffic, escorting dignitaries, and conducting sobriety tests. Enforces weapons systems security standards, traffic rules and regulations, including those related to speed, reckless and drunken driving.
  • Ensures accurate completion of required paperwork, forms, and reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MILITARY REQUIREMENTS:

Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership.   • Must obtain and maintain first responder training/certifications required in CPR techniques, self-aid buddy care, and first aid on the job and maintain annually.
  • May be required to work other than normal duty hours. Overtime may be required.
  • May be required to wear special protective clothing such as coats, boots, vests, respirator masks, and/or helmets.

Qualifications

General Experience:
Have at least six months of working experiences and the successful completion of the Air Force Technical Training AFSC/Security Forces School.

Specialized Experience:
Have at least 12 months of the following experiences:
  • Performing practical security force activities in direct support of the military weapon systems and physical security; law and order; and area security operations.
  • Experiences are in law enforcement, maintaining law and order, preserving the peace, and protecting life and civil rights within the jurisdiction of military installations.
  • Have general experiences in protecting federal property from hazards such as sabotage, espionage, trespass, theft, fire, and accident or willful damage and destruction.
  • Experiences in securing crime and incident scenes; apprehending and detaining suspects; searches persons and property; and collects, seize, and preserve evidence.
  • Experienced in conducting interviews of witnesses and suspects and obtains statements and testifies in official judicial proceedings. Has work experiences in responding to disaster and relief operations and participates in contingencies.
  • Knowledgeable in developing plans, policies, procedures, and detailed instructions to implement security force programs. Is competent and experienced in maintaining accountability and ensuring security for weapons, ammunition, and explosives utilized in the course of instruction in accordance with applicable Air Force Instructions.
  • Experienced in implementing ground weapons training programs.
  • Experienced in the control and safeguarding of arms, ammunition, and equipment; and, instructs ground weapons qualification training. Have competencies in managing weapon placement to security forces and ground defense force commanders.
  • Have experiences in inspecting ground weapons, replacing unserviceable parts, and analyzing malfunctions by inspections and serviceability testing. Have experiences in firing weapons for accuracy and serviceability.
  • Understands how to control and operate firing ranges and associated facilities to include supervising construction and rehabilitation.
  • Experiences may include instructions on the proper use of handguns, rifles, machine guns and other base defense/ground combat skills equipment, in accordance with approved lesson plans and course control documents.
  • Experienced in weaponry, laws, directives, programs, policies, and procedures governing Security Forces activities; installation security; weapon system and resource security; anti-terrorism; law enforcement and investigations; military working dogs; air base defense; training; pass and registration; civilian work force; and combat arms.
Supervisory Specialized Experience:
Have experience in managing the function of the work to be performed. Experience which includes leading, directing, and assigning work of personnel.
