Summary

About the Position: This position falls under Defense Health Agency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Directorate of Medicine and requires one year of specialized experience which includes overseeing subordinates, performing breathing treatments or pulmonary evaluations and maintaining respiratory therapy equipment. Ordering of supplies for the Respiratory department as well as the Pulmonary clinic.

Duties

  • The Supervisory Respiratory Therapist (SRT) serves as the primary trainer and technical leader for respiratory procedures within the Pulmonary Clinic.
  • Responsible for the comprehensive management of all pulmonary and respiratory equipment, ensuring optimal functionality and availability to support patient care.
  • Serves as Supervisory Respiratory Therapist by planning and prioritizing subordinates' work, setting short-term goals, and preparing schedules to ensure task completion.
  • Provide advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on work and administrative matters, ensuring they complete assigned duties promptly and satisfactorily.
  • Serves as the primary procedural assistant to the physician and pulmonary care expert, ensuring proper selection, operation, and maintenance of all necessary instruments and equipment.
  • Ensures optimal patient preparation for procedures through comprehensive assessments, proper positioning, and adherence to protocols, minimizing complications while promoting safety and comfort.
  • Performs specialized pulmonary and critical care procedures, including bronchoscopy, biopsy, airway management, sputum induction, breathing treatments, and injections.
  • Coordinates technical care, demonstrating proficiency in anatomy, patient assessment, airway anesthesia, and emergency interventions. Responsible for selecting instruments, assessment before procedures.
  • Performs specialized pulmonary procedures, with expertise in equipment, patient assessment, airway anesthesia, and emergency care. Manages instrument preparation, medication administration, specimen collection, and patient positioning.
  • Responsible for managing all pulmonary and respiratory equipment to ensure optimal functionality and availability for patient care.
  • Provides technical leadership and serves as the primary subject matter expert for all aspects of blood gas analysis and co-oximetry operations.
  • Monitor daily Quality Control (QC) logs, review and submit log sheets and temperature charts, and ensure timely quality data reporting to Point-of-Care Testing (POCT).
  • Must possess a comprehensive understanding of Joint Commission (JCAHO) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation guidelines and regulatory compliance.
  • Responsible for training, educating, and supervising staff as bronchoscopy technicians; overseeing the High-Level Disinfection (HLD) program to ensure that all personnel are trained, certified, and consistently compliant with regulatory standards.

  • This position has been designated “Mission Essential” with physical duty. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent may be required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled.
  • Pre-employment physical required. Required to be able to lift up to 50lbs
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • Tuberculosis (TB): This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
  • Tier 3(Secret): This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Basic Requirement for Supervisory Respiratory Therapist Specialized Experience:

One year of specialized experience which includes overseeing subordinates, performing breathing treatments or pulmonary evaluations and maintaining respiratory therapy equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education: Two Full years of graduate education or a master's degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as respiratory therapy.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
